Students have come up with a new way to cheat: “Exams that are faked. Not plagiarized but faked. Does this paper have actual misconceptions, or non-conceptions?” I experienced this as recently as last week and was very annoyed by the phenomenon.
Yale is now outsourcing a campus to Singapore. And here I thought my alma mater couldn’t get even more bizarre than it already is.
If you have never heard the term “maternal gatekeeping”, you need to read this. I plan to blog about this phenomenon in the near future, so it will be nice if people have a handle on the terminology in advance.

Harvard University students walk out on a prof for teaching them what they see as the wrong kind of economics. I don’t know much about economics but if I had a chance to take a course with Greg Mankiw, I’d have to be dragged out of the classroom, to tell you the truth. They’d have to chase me out at night.

My most vicious trolls and cyber-bullies have been women. This is yet another missed opportunity for me to feel victimized as a woman.
Mine have been males, predominantly, although I know from real life experience, that backstabbing is considered an ideal, “feminine” way to get ahead in the workplace.
I was surprised to read Echidne’s post because it suggests that bullying women for being women is still continuing on the Internet. For me, the bullying suddenly stopped around 2009, which corresponds with the time around which I stopped being a philosophical idealist.
Before then, I had a lot of ideas about masculine nobility and whatnot, so every time a troll behaved in a way that didn’t correspond to what I had idealized, I felt deeply hurt. This was until I realized that my perceptions that males could have severe deficits, primarily in comprehension but also in personality, were actually correct. I wasn’t failing to see the world accurately in situations that brought about my disappointment — I was seeing it correctly.
Since I made this reality adjustment to a lower level of expectation in some regards (but also a much more realistic one) trolls have left me alone.
I would have hoped that the seeming disappearance of trolls had extended far beyond my personal experience to that of other women as well, but perhaps this isn’t so — although I get the impression that the days of outright vitriol against strangers are passing.

My trolls have no correlation by gender, but they certainly have a correlation by age; almost ll of my trolls have been in their mid-50s and beyond. Maybe it’s because my posts on children’s rights touch a nerve.
Also, I can never imagine walking out of a classroom because I disagreed with a professor. It’s happened so often, and I’ve learned more from the ones I disagreed with than the ones I’ve agreed with 100%, because I learned to refine and develop my arguments better. Those Harvard students boggle my mind.

I got a feeling she initially responded to the note with a sense of humor, but then got prodded by people who read the story into feeling outraged. I didn’t follow the story after that. The agent got sacked? Wow.

I decided it was probably written as a joke by a woman. Jill decided at some stage it was an attempt to humiliate her by some man.

The idea that a man humiliates you by noticing that you are a sexual being shows a profoundly puritanical attitude to sex. You’ve got to believe on some level that sex is dirty to react this way. What if a note had been left on the text of a scholarly presentation, for example? Would that be equally humiliating?

They had Mankiw on NPR to talk about the walk-out. He said that, ironically, he was delivering a lecture on inequality the day they had happened to decide to walk out.
I agree too, I would love to be able to hear a lecture by Mankiw. I guess when you have him as your professor full-time you don’t appreciate what you’re getting access to?

I only ask because a couple of spurious charges for $4500 dollars have appeared on my visa card with my only reference being that the merchant is JAMONES DEHESA NEGRA in Spain.

I have already cancelled the card. I googled the merchant name and there is a business in Salamanca in Spain of that name but I couldn’t figure out what they do. The google translation was awful.

Hi — at this time, it’s private to everyone. I no longer update it.
I just got tired of it, and want to move on to other things. Blogging no longer fits with how I want to think or to relate to the world, at least in most important ways, and so it was time to retire the blog and the activity of blogging.
Glad you and other read it. Maybe it’ll be back again one day.
