Spoons now have gender! I always knew there was something kitchen utensils were sorely missing. We now need to assign nationality to them and maybe even give out little passports.

Dick Cheney says Canada is a dangerous place.

Religious homeschoolers breed dependent doormats. The first paragraph of the post is apologetic, servile, and meaningless. But the rest of the post is very good.

Yet another sex-deprived, unpopular, miserable and lonely guy screeching about those bad, mean, “arrogant” women who dare manage their own reproductive health without asking for his opinions. My blogroll has been populated by one desperate post after another written by pathetic men with no lives of their own who are heart-broken that women are not inviting them to manage their uteri. Are they not seeing how ridiculous this makes them look?

The claim that vaginal birth is an “achievement” or “empowering” or worthy of praise makes as much sense as believing your eye color is an achievement or empowering or worthy of praise. You have to be pretty desperate for positive attention to take credit for bodily attributes that are beyond anyone’s control.” Hear, hear!

This great post debunks the myth that more time is what you need to produce a lot of high-quality academic writing.

I know it will never happen, but I am waiting for the dozens of “I’m sorry world, for being such a fucking idiot” posts from all of the eventheliberals who for years imagined that a Grand Bargain could be struck with the anti-choice movement if only stupid liberal bloggers would be nicer to them.” Exactly. There is no arguing, compromising, or finding common ground with unhinged, miserable people. Mollycoddling them is a losing strategy. They see your weakness and start bullying you. We need to speak their own language to them and scream them down. Nothing else will work.

Agribusiness is ruining capitalism.

Publishers turn the concept of “open access” into a joke by charging authors huge sums of money for placing their own articles into open access. The sleaziest, nastiest jerks congregate at publishing houses. The good news is that the institution of a publishing house will soon die out completely thanks to digital publishing and self-publishing.

A great post from a promising new blogger from Israel: “I’m willing to sacrifice a lot in order to make a secular, democratic, open Israel a reality. Some religious folk are willing to sacrifice a lot to see the Third Temple built on Mount Moria and the Judian kingdom re-instated, its laws firmly based on Jewish Halacha.”

The foundations of intellectual shamanism.

Will Quebec save Canada? (My personal answer would be yes, of course.)

A very valuable post for academic writers. Highly recommended.

  1. Hmm. From the story about Dick Cheney that Juan Cole linked to, I found the following quotation: “In September, Mr. Cheney was speaking at a private club in Vancouver when protesters massed outside the front door harassing ticket holders and in one instance, choking a security guard.”

You know what, I’m not sure that it’s “cowardly” to want to avoid having that sort of thing occur. Of course, I would not have set up any future appearances in Canada after having something like that happen, but the story doesn’t say when the appearance that was cancelled was set up. Perhaps it had been set up at the same time the September one and they were waiting to see what the atmosphere would be like at any future gigs before deciding to cancel them. It’s cute to think that rough, tough Dick Cheney considers Canada a scary violent place, but that doesn’t actually seem to be the situation here.

Please note: I’m not in any way shilling for Cheney, just pointing out that people are taking that quote out of context and ignoring the fact that there was already a protest in Canada that got violent at a place Cheney spoke at before, one where Canadians got hurt.

    1. Cheney should realize that this is the kindest attitude he will get anywhere. He is REALLY hated around the world. I’m glad he is facing that and seeing that even peaceful Canadians erupt in aggression towards him.

      1. He should probably take a cue from his former superior, George W. Bush, who seems to have mostly dropped out of public life. (As far as I know. I don’t follow the doings of ex-presidents.)

Re Cheney: I don’t hate him. I hate few people. In fact, right now I don’t hate anyone. Okay, maybe I hate the person who invented those automatic flush toilets that Walmart uses in their restroom that start up just as you sit down. That person should burn.

          – I thought I was the only person who got really spooked by those. 🙂

  2. This week, I wrote Overreacting about an experience with street harassment and a friend’s reaction to my telling.

Also a lot of endometriosis facts. The one that’s very nearly about to become (or is it already too late?) my personal soapbox for the month is the one about diagnostic delay.

  3. Keep this up, Clarissa, and I’m not going to have to go anywhere else for inspiration on Mondays.

Very nice summary of the idiot writing about Sandra Fluke. How deliberately obtuse. Why do you have so many bloggers like him in you feed? If I read dribble like that every day, I’d smoke more than I already do.

    1. I don’t know, they seemed to be normal people when I added them to my blogroll. And then they all went completely weird on the contraception issue.

The problem is that something is wrong with my Google Reader and I can’t unfollow idiots. So I’m stuck with them.

    1. As you can imagine, I got to the part “This is in addition to the shamefully high cesarean section rates of most hospitals” and stopped reading. When the idea of shame gets attached to ANY mode of giving birth, I lose interest. In a normal person’s head, a woman should experience no shame at any point of giving birth for any reason.

God save us all from such officious hacks being anywhere in the vicinity of our bodies.

      1. A pity because you didn’t understand what she said, which you would, if continued. She means women pushed into unnecessary C-sections against their wishes.

        1. Yes, because women are such stupid cattle that they cannot possibly be expected to make informed decisions about their bodies. That’s precisely the same attitude that informs the anti-choice and anti-contraception efforts.

I looked at the post again. The very next paragraph after the quoted by you sentence is very interesting imo.

        1. Yeah, that part where she tells us how stupid women think stupid things. That’s called second-guessing and it’s really wrong to do that unless you really despise people you are talking about.

I have now written an entire post about this, so thanks for the link!

Rising right-wing star, Arizona legislator, Terri Proud believes the road to stopping women from having abortions is paved with terrorizing them and forcing them to watch medical procedures.
    The actual email reads:

Personally I’d like to make a law that mandates a woman watch an abortion being performed prior to having a “surgical procedure”. If it’s not a life it shouldn’t matter, if it doesn’t harm a woman then she shouldn’t care, and don’t we want more transparency and education in the medical profession anyway? We demand it everywhere else.

What a tragic, evil joke. A drive-by shooter in the beautiful, almost magical, city of Toulouse, France, murders three Jewish children and a teacher in front of their school. Various VIPs issue statements about how terrible is this deed, how unspeakable.

And yet at that very moment, the next round of murders, the next slanderous and inciting antisemitic lies, are being perpetrated by respectable people and institutions. There is no real soul-searching, no true effort to do better, no serious examination about how the anti-Israel and anti-Jewish hysteria is paving the way for murder and fueling dreams of genocide.

Here are three examples of such deeds in nominally democratic countries — not Iran, not Syria, not Pakistan, where such things are even more intense — but in supposedly rational places.

In Israeli newspaper today I saw an article saying that while a Polish immigrant to US honestly says “I am proud to be an American” upon arrival, some Muslim immigrants to Europe & France, in particular, are another matter, and in enough cases even their children don’t feel at home in a new democratic country, turning to extreme preachers at some mosques in France itself and here we get an example… May be you can write a post about it all: the murder, what can be done to prevent next one, immigration policies – what can be changed?

Also one article said that after more such cases many Jews will leave France and go to Israel, that there are bound to be more young men like this in the city. Sadly, I agree. I love living in Israel, but wouldn’t want many Jews being frightened into coming here.

You said living in Israel is dangerous, but imo it’s not more dangerous for Jews than in that French city. That killer won’t be the last and the time it took for French forces to kill him, the press coverage, “the honor” can only inspire new terrorists.
