I never imagined I would write these words, but here is what I just discovered:
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote today on the STEM Jobs Act, a Republican-backed bill that would create up to 55,000 new visas for foreign graduates of American universities with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The bill would also eliminate the diversity visa lottery, which allocates spots to immigrants from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
This is phenomenal news! It comes a little too late for my husband, but still, this is amazing! And long overdue.
But here is what I don’t get. The linked piece says the White House is opposing this. Can anybody explain why that is? What can be more reasonable, fair, and right than finally eliminating the excruciatingly stupid and wrong visa lottery in favor of such an amazing, logical, and reasonable program?
Why is Obama opposing a piece of legislation which will finally turn this country’s immigration policies in the right direction?

Don’t hold your breath too long. Idiots like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have been contemplating on running for the Republican nomination in 2016 and I read on an article somewhere that Jeb Bush is also a possibility. There is no saving this party from ultimate collapse and irrelevancy. This is unsustainable in the long run and if the Republicrats (yes, I’m calling them this for a reason) want to maintain the paradigm the Democans will essentially switch places with them after 8 years, something’s got to give. That is just my personal opinion of the situation.

Oh, I agree that need to take urgent measures to guarantee the party’s survival. What I don’t get is why Obama is opposing this great bill.

You must have missed this long and painful story. 🙂 N. had to stay unemployed for 2 years in spite of having a PhD from a prestigious US university because he couldn’t get a work visa. Two years where he could have been paying good taxes. In the meanwhile, all kinds of shady persons from his country were coming in on these lottery visas.

The Republican policy no doubt would reduce the number of islamists securing those visas. That is what Obama objects to.

Ah, I was wondering why the Republicans were all of a sudden on the side of the angels. There had to be a catch.
Well, whatever their motivations, as long as they achieve something positive as a result.
