Canada, the land of progress: “The Broadbent Institute has released a new set of polling (PDF) as to Canadians’ values. And it’s particularly worth noting that even on the Cons’ signature issues such as tax cuts, austerity and crime – where millions upon millions of public dollars have been spent in a combined effort at branding and persuasion – 60% or more of respondents (including new immigrants) side with a more progressive option.

I’m very happy about this revival of interest in Hans Fallada. He is a brilliant writer.

Not long ago, a colleague discussed with me the recently-concluded faculty search in his department. His department decided to hire a male candidate, and my colleague told me he was relieved. In fact, he said to me, “It’s so good to know that men can still get hired. I thought we could only hire women, so it’s nice to know that men can still get hired.” Gosh, how much I hate these stupid melodrama peddlers! Yes, nobody hires men any longer. They all roam the streets, unemployed and miserable. It’s precisely this tendency to see everything in apocalyptic terms that alienates me from my colleagues.

Polanski is being his usual disgusting self. He can’t make movies because he is signally devoid of talent, so he attracts attention by spouting stupidities. I wonder when he will start talking at empty chairs, which is in vogue among Hollywood wash-outs, as I keep hearing.

It is really cute how stupid losers who insist on whining about the mean, horrible feminists always pretend my blog doesn’t exist. When I rebuked the creepazoid who fantasized about her son growing up to be a rapist, nobody felt it necessary to quote me. Of course, my writing destroy the myth of the man-eating evil feminists. People who criticize other for hypocrisy while being deeply hypocritical disgust me.

The worst of the pick-up artists insist that men and women want such radically different things that only the cynical mastery of manipulation techniques will lead to happiness. The good news is the emergence of a different model for men and women alike, based on mutuality, kindness and willingness to prioritise other’s boundaries as well as one’s own pleasure.” Exactly.

Is Preparing for Class Before the Semester Begins “Unpaid Labor”??” For me it’s not an issue at all because I spread out my salary across 12 months and always get paid more in summer than during the rest of the year. Other people seem to care about the subject a lot, though. Why not just do the kind of salary deferral I do and never have to worry about not having money in the summer is a mystery to me.

Publishers have fought against the “proposed international instrument on limitations and exceptions for persons with print disabilities” for *30* years.”

The ridiculous proliferation and popularity of TV rape scenes — there’s a sexual assault about every 10 seconds on television — is proof enough of that, as if you needed it. When TV rapes women, if there is ever any underlying high moral purpose serving Truth and Beauty, I have never seen it.

And the post of the week: “Michelle Obama has been reduced to a fashion icon and promoter of vegetable gardens and healthy eating.  She had better not act angry, ever. She must show some class, at all times. She sends her girls to a private school, and Obama’s friend Rahm Emanuel destroys public education in Chicago.  I admire none of this. Obama has not kept his promises,  except the one to kill Bin Laden, and well we did get out of Iraq and well we are all over the Middle East anyway, and we are supposed to stick it?  Be grateful that he hasn’t messed things up as badly as Bush? Why?

    Fucking macho crap! 😦

The “stupid loser” is presumably my coblogger ballgame, who clearly failed to comply with the first rule of win, namely that thou shalt always consult Clarissa’s Blog before one blogs about anything oneself.

I’m not entirely sure what Clarissa has taken exception to. From the post:

The post was widely-embraced among feminists. It was from a tweet from a feminist that I found out about it. However, I did not have the same positive feelings about the post that many mainstream feminists had. In fact, I found it disturbing.

I don’t see anything there that would be contradicted by a one feminist blogger condemning the piece. We have noted a general inability/reluctance on the part of feminists to recognise or condemn misandry. We recognise there are, of course, exceptions to this. Indeed I set up a thread specifically to record instances of feminists doing so. I’ll happily add Clarrissa’s remark to it.

        1. This “general inability/reluctance” is something you see only because you continue reading the same boring subset of 2-3 online resources. You need the bugbear of bad, evil feminists to excuse your own inability/reluctance to actually do something to create change.

This whining about the bad Mommy who failed to love you enough (and to whom you give the code name of “feminist”) stands in lieu of genuine political activism on your part. There is no movement for men’s rights in this country, just a bunch of whiny Momma’s boys. And what a shame.

I’d be very interested if you could point to some of the sources you think I’ve been missing.

        Oh dear.

Some months ago, I was a regular reader and commenter here. You had some kind words about me back then, and I aways found that you treated me personally with respect, even when we disagreed on substantive matters. I’ve been away from blogging for a while. I come back, and I get this.

        I am genuinely saddened.

        1. How do you react to “some men rape, ergo all men are rapists?” And how do you expect me to react to “some feminists are vicious freaks, ergo all of them are”?

Is this question addressed to me?

Neither my coblogger nor I have said anything that could remotely be reasonably construed as “some feminists are vicious freaks, ergo all of them are”. Such a remark from him would be self-referential anyway, because he identifies as a feminist.

      1. Agreed, a guy who doesn’t like being friend-zoned should dump the woman doing so from his friend list and be firm about it.

Such a guy should also remove the friend option from women in general until he gets a girlfriend or decides he’s okay with a life of being a celibate emotional sponge for users.

In other words, accepting friendship when a person wants something different is a very poor life strategy.

          – Exactly. Such a simple idea is somehow inaccessible to so many people.

  2. While I agree that the population of Canada is significantly more progressive than the government of Canada (this being the result of having three or four centre-left parties but only one right wing party), I would always take a study from the Broadbent Institute with a grain of salt. Partisan “think tanks,” whether on the right or left, are consistently able to “prove” whatever they set out believing in the first place.

      1. I think the Western Canadians are less progressive than Americans.(David)

But surprisingly more progressive and enlightened than separatists, go figure.

      2. OK, let’s agree that all Canadians rock. 🙂

Nope, lets just agree that some are just not equal to others. 😉
And when youre done, go kick a separatist in the ass. 🙂

        1. This is not even funny any longer. I read an article a while ago about a boy who was diagnozed with schizophrenia because he kept telling everybody he was Superman and wanted to dress like Superman. The kid was 5. The greatest proof for the parents that he was sick was that he wanted to go to church dressed as a Superman.

    1. What can I say? It is tragic that Europe decided to go in this direction of shedding its most profound achievements in the face of a crisis. Europeans are casting about for a shared identity but they seem to be finding it in really scary places. If they continue on its way, we are likely to end up with Puritanical, repressive Europe and civilized, progressive US.

I hope, however, that Europeans find the strength to see that this is a dangerous road and turn back towards progress.
