What Does Putin Want?

Putin hates the West and wants it to collapse. When that happens, Russia will be able to occupy its place of leadership and appropriate its cultural, political and economic hegemony. He is no secretive about this goal. To the contrary, he spells it out very clearly every chance he gets.

What will the collapse of the West look like? Here are a few things that the Kremlin propaganda machine has been advancing as the positive scenarios that would benefit Russia:

  1. The collapse of the EU.
  2. Another global economic crisis.
  3. The turmoil in the US political system that would demonstrate that the democratic institutions are weak and rotten.
  4. Animosity between different US states. Ideally, talk of secession or profound regional tensions in the US.
  5. Demonstrably falsified elections in the US.
  6. An explosion of racist and xenophobic violence in Europe and the US.
  7. Far-right governments in power in Europe and the US.

While Obama was president, Putin limited himself to a practical advancement of the first of these goals. Now the rest of the goals have opened themselves up as serious possibilities. With Obama in the White House, Putin wanted to rule part of Eastern Europe and that was that. Now he knows he can get a lot more.

    ….. how? That surely sounds like something that he might like but….. how could it be accomplished? The USSR only had brute military force (and economic parasitism) in the Warsaw Pact.

    With the EU I think he was more looking at how badly mismanaged it’s been and his actions are more…. opportunistic than anything else. A big problem of the EU is that the leadership is largely reactive and is paralyzed when facing any kind of new situation.

    Merkel herself has done more to damage the EU than any other leader and I often wonder if she’s not some kind of mole for Putin (she was an Ossi after all), which makes me think I’m crazy, but she’s a one woman wrecking crew.

      • Russia is the carrier of the eternal God-given truths and values that have been rejected by the degenerate West. The Roman Empire will be reconstituted in Russia with Moscow as the Rome. The Russians are God-chosen people. I know it sounds crazy as all hell but that is what they are very seriously and very passionately discussing in Russia. And this is not new. These fantasies are at least 150 years old.

      • I think she has been enormously useful to Putin but without realizing it. But I’m also sure that Trump is not letting himself know what he’s really doing. Personal narratives tend to be extremely self-serving. And God, it’s so easy for those who are skilled to put needed thoughts into their marks’ heads.
