Turns out that the Democrats are not doing anything to renew the party and create a fresh vision for it because they are convinced they are guaranteed to win all elections from now on anyway. They believe that if they repeat constantly “OMG, did you hear the horrible things Trump said / did / tweeted today”, that will be enough for them to destroy Republicans forever.
Of course, the strategy turned to be a failure during the presidential election but they expect it to be a big hit in 2018.
This explains a lot. I thought that everything I’ve been seeing was deranged but no, there turned out to be a simple explanation. Liberals sincerely believe Trump is their ticket to complete domination of national politics because he’s bound to screw up so badly that they will look angelic in comparison.

We Democrats have been called “Socialists” for so long, that too many of us flinch at the word!
And we do everything we can to twist our goals so that the Lumpen-morontariat on the right, can’t say that this idea, or that idea, is…. SOCIALIST!!!

I try to remind the idiotic hordes that the best parts of America are, actually, what they would call, “Socialist!”:
Social Security.
Medicare.’
Medicaid.
The US Military.

Any military unit of whatever size is only as good as its weakest member. So, everyone in that unit pitches-in to help that/those individual(s) out!

The Dems are just as divided as the GOP. The Clinton wing of the party could be called the “GOP lite.” The left wing is too far left at this point for a large part of the electorate. That could change. Unless the Dems can find a unifier within the party, or unless Trump alienates what’s left of the moderates on the GOP side (and that hasn’t happened yet) the Dems will continue to lose.
The choice of Hillary in 2016 helped to elect Trump. I’d hate to see the Dems help re-elect him, but that certainly is within their power. The unwillingness of the left to follow Bernie after he endorsed Clinton, and in fact their turning on Sanders, cost the left a lot in the way of credibility and may have reduced their influence over the next nominee.
If Gillibrand wants a shot, she needs to start building a grass roots organization in all 50 states this year. Bernie’s mistake was starting construction of a field organization too late. However, enough of that organization remains to make him the frontrunner for 2020 if he wants it.
What should be interesting is the upcoming special election in Kansas. If the GOP fails there in one of their core states, that might trigger a revolt in the ranks. We’ll see.

We know how well that worked.
I have Mother Jones in my FB feed and truly I’m sick of “OMG? WTF? BOOM!.” I have never blocked so many government officials on Twitter in my life, not because they tweet at me but because everyone keeps tweeting their dumb words and their reactions into my timeline. If I’m eating dinner with my parents, I try my utmost to put on background music or sports or literally anything other than news or politics b/c I can I don’t want to see or know what stupid thing some Republican did or said today. It’s also because my parents get into stupid pointless fights over the dumb minutiae. I have voted in every presidential election and every local election save one, since I was eligible to vote and you know I’ve watched all of those primary and presidential debates. Maybe it’s stupid, but I’d like to be sane. Now if this is what someone like me does, could you imagine what most people are doing? I haven’t even gotten into the people who are happy with what’s going on.

I can’t believe people are dumb enough to make the same mistake twice. Sure, we’ll probably make gains in the House in 2018 because the party not holding the presidency always does. And I think it’s helpful to criticize Trump when he does something that would piss off the people who voted for him (so not racism, doing things he said he was gonna do, etc.) But that can’t be our entire strategy. At the very least everyone can agree that state Democratic parties need to be better organized and messaging needs to change. We can’t kick back, relax, and hope people vote for us.

Also, there isn’t much that can be done at a national level right now. Everything is reactionary, so something like proposing a new budget from time to time will be ignored (if you elect Democrats, this is the budget you’ll get!)
I can’t tell you how many times I saw networks cut away from a Democratic rally to focus on Trump’s empty podium. It was disgusting.
Is anyone going to pay attention to Schoolhouse Rock type ads (or whatever, i dunno fake MMA videos) where they explain how government works and why people should vote for Democrats? :p

You are right, they can’t do much now. Which is why I hope they are using the moment to compose fresh new narratives and the agendas for 2018. If once again they give nothing but “At least, we are not Republicans,” that will be very disappointing.

There is historical precedent here. The Republicans felt this way about Jimmy Carter. They were correct, and turned it into three terms of Republican Presidents.

I think this is a very reductive explanation. Reagan had a very powerful program that appealed to many people. Not me, obviously, but he was a global trendsetter in dismantling the nation-state.
