This week’s Link post of LIBBY ANNE was very good, and I especially enjoyed the analysis of Right vs Left election campaigns as experienced by citizens of Georgia’s Sixth District :

Another linked post which stood out for me was “Do You See Me?” describing the treatment of a rape survivor by The Masters College. Among other things, they tried to force her to apologize to her rapist and to drop the charges with the police. When she refused, she was kicked out and “They are changing my three years of earned college credits from A’s to F’s. I have flunked out of college.”
How is this college still open? Changing grades retroactively is a crime which should be easy to prove and punish, isn’t it? Do they go without governmental funding so Title X doesn’t apply to them? They should be sued into the ground, with or w/o Title X or whatever changes.
The Masters college story happened 11 years ago. I’m surprised at the sudden interest now when, of course, it’s way too late to look for any evidence of what actually happened.
One was an angry protest by two guys who were upset that social changes weren’t progressing fast enough and the other was by a woman whose country had been invaded and brutalized by the country whose anthem was playing.
Oh, we know how afraid you are of ‘angry’ black people. I love both protests. Why do I have to choose one or the other?

What worked in the 1960s doesn’t work any more. Protests are dead as a way of achieving anything at all. It’s a different world. The symbolism and the language of effective protest movements from 60 years ago have been appropriated by the culture of spectacle. It’s all about making money for somebody.
Once again, let us review the words he chooses to describe the protests. All the black guys did was to raise their arms. In silence. That makes them angry (which is a bad thing, I guess). Do you think the woman wasn’t angry at the Soviet anthem being played? That would be the most natural emotion in the world!
But you’re playing the game where angry is subtly conflated with petulant/immature (which is something you’ve always done for protests and groups you don’t like).
Which is why the form of her silent protest is dignified to Cliff, but a similar silent protest by black people is cast off as angry and petulant.

A fist is an inherently angry symbol and their protest had nothing to do with the moment or the olympics or even any particular event in the US. It was out of place and meaningless.
The gymnast’s protest was about two personal indignities she was being subjected to at that very moment.
Rich people have an instinct to do things that benefit them economically. While Trump and these millionaire athletes are putting on this show and distracting everybody’s attention with it, a huge tax cut for them (also known as a new healthcare bill) is being snuck by all of us in Congress.
Of course, I’m not saying there is a conspiracy if any sort. It’s an instinctive thing.
