Ah, it’s a good thing I had my reading glasses handy — your headline looked like “Shame on Dreidel!”, and I thought I was being banished again.
The professor’s article was idiotic — no one hates white people more than a guilt-ridden, self-loathing white liberal — but relatively tame. At least he didn’t use the radical feminists’ favorite expression “toxic masculinity.”

I agree. And, as you said in the OP, it wasn’t even a fair representation of his argument. It was a tweet of a tweet of a tweet: fractured beyond recognition.

He’s a tenured professor. His right to express his ideas, whatever they are, should be protected by the University. I’m stunned that they folded so quickly and didn’t even try to fight for him. I’m also sad that nobody seems to care much. I found out by complete accident from a very obscure site.

The Drexel situation is absolutely disgraceful. THIS is what students should be protesting. Not Halloween costume ridiculousness.
And white men need to stop pearl clutching. This administration has cabinet comprised of almost exclusively white men; congress has a white male; the senate has a white male majority; this country’s wealthiest CEO’s have a white male majority, and white men largely escape excessive police brutality. White men are doing A-OK in this country. Meanwhile white men are organizing Nazi/KKK rallies across the country and stock piling massive amounts of weapons. So yes: some Americans see white masculinity as toxic. That shouldn’t be a huge shocker to anyone.

I completely agree the content of the twits is immaterial, this is an unacceptable broach of free speech.
And it’s also terrible to think that anyone is infantile enough to take things found on twitter seriously….

Oh, man, come on, I was just sitting down to write the exact same post. Every day on the news it’s “Trump said on Twitter he’ll do XYZ! The horror! The Apocalypse!” Trump ends up never actually doing XYZ but nobody remembers that the next time around. Yes, he’s totally yanking their chain. It’s sad to watch.

I think it’s bigger than Trump, it’s the medium of twitter/facebook/other-social-media-dreck that’s pulling people’s chains non-stop.
I enjoy surfing twitter for the latest scandales at time but I don’t take it seriously, it’s like an interactive video game, but so many, many people seem to take the contents so deadly seriously…..

Yes, I totally agree with you, Clarissa.
But I will also point out that this professor is an absolute clown who uses twitter to perform being radical. He’s 100% in favor of punching Richard Spencer and neo-Nazis. Many people on the left think this is counterproductive politically. When he was asked whether or not he would punch Richard Spencer if he had the opportunity, he wouldn’t answer and just called the question silly.
He has some great publications with Duke UP, but some of his earlier articles just make me want to shake my head and laugh (“Brechtian Hip-Hop: Didactics and Self-Production in Post-Gangsta Political Mixtapes” and an article on Kanye West).
But I fully support his freedom of expression and right to say silly, provocative things on Twitter without repercussions from his university. (By the way, the silly tweets I’m referring to do not include the ones for which he was put on administrative leave; I actually find these tweets about Las Vegas to be rather plausible arguments.)
