It’s curious that people who think there’s nothing better than complete liberation of an individual (aka a desiring subject) from all constraints are the same ones who worry about the planet’s resources being depleted. And the people who don’t give a crap about the global warming or finite resources are waging a quixotic battle to resist this complete liberation of desiring consumers.
The most interesting question all of us should answer is where each of us believes the barrier to the desiring individual’s freedom should be. And who or what should place and maintain that barrier. God is no longer there to do that even for the very religious. The state is retreating from the task. The community has crumbled away. Where will the subjectivity that recognizes barriers come from?

For the mobile elite, I think it will come from online communities of practice that develop a local or in person component. My hope is this can be worked out for the less elite as well, but I’m less certain about that. If only I knew…

Honestly, I don’t think the paradox exists as you name it. The people use religion as their shield are completely in thrall to a consumerist mentality. “Let me not experience the least amount of discomfort because of my religion. This should also extend to what other people do with their religion and with their lives.”
The tiniest discomfort is the equivalent of martyrdom in their eyes. What is that but a consumerist mentality? “Happy Holidays!” “I want to see your manager!” What is the strong opposition to women getting birth control through insurance anything but a consumerist mentality? “I should have control of what people do with the money I pay them as an employee after it leaves my hands.”
In your metaphor of subjectivity that recognizes barriers, the corporations will bump up against each other. As corporations get larger and larger you’ll see more monopoly or oligopoly situations. Corporations in those markets are not so subject to the desiring consumer — at least not on the level of individual humans. “This is wrong because Jeff Bezos/Amazon says so.” “If it’s good for the Waltons, it must be good for everyone else.”

Everybody is a consumer these days. We all have the mentality of consumers, it’s unavoidable. And it’s not necessarily a tragedy in itself. What’s really spooky, though, is when relationships between human beings and especially the relationship between humans and their selves are organized based on nothing whatsoever but consumerist principles. Sadly, there is absolutely nothing whatsoever to modern-day progressivism than this. It’s all about ” but I wanna, I wanna, I wanna” and complete freakouts when anybody suggests there can be something more important than individual iwannas.
