I’m an old Marxist, and I see the class angle in everything. Brexit, schmexit, the real point of the story about the delivery guy who was fired for saying he supported Brexit is that a spoiled brat “activist” got a working class fellow fired just for fun and to feed his sense of self-righteous touchiness. What the brat found intolerable was that his class inferior dared to opine on politics instead of shutting up and hauling boxes.
I think Macron wants an EU army because he’s afraid that civil unrest in France is not going to go away by itself and that at some point he won’t be able to count on the French army to put down a rebellion by French citizens… so he wants an integrated EU force to do it.
This is a very important point. Austerity (aka the erosion of the nation-state) isn’t going away. It will be rammed through with violence if necessary. It’s only fitting that the violence is as supra-national as the forces it serves.
Sometimes FB is hugely helpful. I just read there that English teachers teach 7th-graders that, in an essay, a thesis is a sentence with three topics in it.
This finally explains the greatest mystery of life for me. For years I’ve been clamoring to the skies, “Why, why is this happening to me?” And now I know.
Another pet peeve is a thesis that starts with an inane quote. Or a dictionary definition. Or a generalization about what “everybody feels.” But I already know that these are taught by the cruel teachers in high school who want to make me suffer.
I keep wondering what it is that they do at school. It’s not reading books or learning information, that’s for sure. But they’ve got to do something. Now I know, though. It’s how to write in a way that will torture the college professors in exquisite ways.
“I love your friends Max and Hayley,” I tell Klara. “There are great kids.”
“So is I,” she says. “But better.”
I just remembered why I emigrated. One needs these reminders every once in a while.
I obviously don’t agree with this article by Kevin Williamson but I love the writing:
If President Trump were this morning to issue a proclamation praising mom and apple pie, you can be sure that black-clad misfits would gather in the public squares of Portland to hurl profanity and illiteracy at mom and her wicked white-supremacist pastries.
The saddest thing is that they quite literally would and my FB feed would explode with sincere support.
Only in America would a person even think to say that anyone presenting herself to a surgeon as simply wanting this or that surgery must get it. The special brew here, of limitless national wealth and limitless personal entitlement, is uniquely American.
This isn’t American. This is simply liberal. This is the essence of today’s liberalism (progressivism, leftism, call it what you may.) The desiring individual should always get the object of desire. Any obstacle between the desiring individual and fulfilment of the desire is an intolerable violence.
Often, the desiring individual has no idea what it is s/he actually desires at any given moment and is enraged by the universe for not figuring it out and providing it anyway.
This is precisely the reason why modern liberals (progressives, leftists, etc) can’t articulate and defend their position on things like immigration, healthcare, UBI, environment, welfare, etc. The position is that “But I wanna, I wanna, I wanna!” is the most important claim in the world. But it’s impossible to explain why it’s so crucial to sacrifice everything to feeding the insatiable Iwannas of the desiring consumer.
