Morning Dialogues

“Mommy, do cows give us milk?”

“Yes.”

“And what do goats give us?”

“They also give milk.”

“What do piggies give us?”

“They give us meat and bacon.”

“Mommy, why does everybody give us something?”

“Because. . . Erm. . . People need a lot of things and take them from everything else.”

“Why do people need so many things, mommy?”

“Erm. . . Hey, look at that funny car over there!”

“Why do people need so many cars, mommy?”

  1. “Why do people need so many cars, mommy?”

This reminded me of a story my mother told about me. It dates from when I was about Klara’s age. One day I asked a long series of ‘why; questions, maybe twenty minutes worth. Then I said “Mommy, what does ‘why’ mean?”
