Bad Speech

I didn’t watch Trump’s State of the Union speech, mostly because I can’t contemplate staring at the smug, dumb little faces of Pence and Pelosi looming in the background. But Stacey Abrams’s response was ridiculously bad. These weepy stories of striving parents that people like Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio so love are extremely passe. They’ve been done, redone, and overdone.

The overall dishonesty of the speech was such that you’d think she’s talking to people she viciously despises. “We can make a plan for immigration in the 21 century!” Well, make it already. Nothing is standing in your way, other than the fact that you’ve already made it and are afraid to be honest about its profoundly neoliberal nature.

God, what a bad speech. It’s extraordinarily hard to look bad after Trump spoke but leave it to the Democrats to choose a person who will accomplish that feat.

  1. “you’d think she’s talking to people she viciously despises”

Didn’t see SOU or response, but yeah, of course she despises a public dumb enough to elect her…

    “you’ve already made it ”

Yeah, it’s called open borders. The funny thing is that open borders people profoundly lose every debate on the merits of the policy, but now it’s being repackaged as ‘anti-racism’ which suddenly renders it immune from examination or criticism.

    1. The ploy is so transparent, it’s ridiculous. At least, Abrams is open about it being an electoral ploy. Bring in millions of uneducated, unskilled immigrants. Make sure they never assimilate and that even their children don’t learn English. Make them completely dependent on whoever throws them a few welfare crumbs, and then give them the right to vote without legalizing them. They are scared, confused, unaware. They’ll guarantee Dem majorities until the end of times. This will allow Democrats to dismantle any obstacle in the path of global capital for good. This is the plan.

        1. “Abrams is most famous for advocating for a right to vote for illegal ”

so she’s against the very concept of ‘citizenship’…. which means no welfare or education or healthcare by right (but by patronage) which is a way of ghettoizing populations behind big bosses…

it’s so progressive it seems like a return to the 19th century!

          1. Absolutely. They are all into this policy but she’s open about it. The others are smarter and keep it to themselves. They think it’s a good idea because this is a great way to guarantee an electoral majority without even having to run. And it’s true. The cost of this plan won’t be borne by them, so who cares.

  2. I agree concerning Abrams’ angry, bitter response to Trump’s SOTU.

But what about the Democrats’ second, Spanish languish response by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, whose 20-minute rebuttal was played on the prime-time Spanish networks Univision and Telemundo.

I didn’t listen for very long, because I know only enough Spanish from listening to local Arizona weather reports to recognize the words “dark clouds surrounding Trump,” and enough Italian (sounds like Spanish) expressions from my my years stationed in Sicily to think I heard the accusations, “disorder, criminality, and collusion.”

If the Spanish rebuttal was as bitter as Abrams’, I doubt that it got very far.

    1. Two rebuttals in one day are too much even for me. It’s unbelievable that the Democrats still can’t come up with real, specific proposals instead of all this pablum about tired relatives who interest exactly no one.

Of course, Abrams’s most famous proposal is to let illegal immigrants vote, and she doesn’t want to publicize that one much.

Hey they’re winning… ever increasing numbers of migrants, no border wall funding. It’s fighting dirty and not anything a person with a brain can be proud of supporting but why change a winning strategy.

  3. By the way, did anybody bother to listen to non-Democrat Bernie Sanders’ attempt to hog in on the action with his totally uninvited rebuttal??

I don’t understand the point of watching responses to SOTUs you haven’t watched. Because I didn’t watch the SOTU, I didn’t watch the response. (I preferred watching Barbarella and listening to Ozomatli while nursing my hellacious cold instead.) I could predict, without trying, your reaction to both. It’s my position that Stacey Abrams’ response was bad because I have never seen a good response to a SOTU.

Question for the room: Are there any good SOTUs or responses to SOTUs you’ve seen?

As for Trump’s speech, by this point, everybody can predict exactly what he’s going to say. The guy isn’t an unpredictable speaker, to put it mildly. It’s always the same stuff with him.
