Native People

Blooper number one million five hundred eighteen from AOC:

“We are standing on native land. And Latino people are descendants of native people. We can’t be criminalized simply for our identity and our status.”

All the “native people” look the same to her, I guess.

  1. “Latino people are descendants of native people.”

Weren’t “Latino people” (Spanish conquistadors) the first colonist oppressors of the “native people” on both the South and North American continents, long before the British navy defeated the Spanish armada in the sixteenth century, and took over in North America? (South America wasn’t worth conquering.)

British occupiers became “Americans” and pushed the last of the Latino occupiers out of what is now Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California in the mid-1800’s.

And they aren’t getting any of it back! 🙂

  2. I noticed something similar with John Leguizamo’s Latin History for Morons. He seems unable to recognize that the murderous raping Spaniards were his ancestors and the source of his culture. History becomes a lot more nuanced once we recognize that is us on trial and not other people.

  3. She probably means she’s mestiza and most Latino people claim to be mestizos.

We really haven’t dealt with the effects of the Mexican American War on the psyche of Americans. :-p Otherwise how do you explain the insane yammerings about “the wall?”

At least she’s not Mexican-American otherwise she’d start saying stuff like “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us!”

      1. And I’m not even talking about the profound contradiction between believing in the importance of “whose land this originally was” and being mortally opposed to Israel. The poor little airhead is incapable of this level of abstraction. She just dumbly repeats memes that have many likes online.

I’m truly stunned that it took US politics under 2 years to produce somebody dumber than Trump. I remember how we all laughed at Dubya’s stupidity. And now he seems like a veritable genius compared to these clowns.

  4. Very many “Hispanics” are in fact Native American by blood, speak Spanish as a second language, and so on. If you speak Spanish and so realize people aren’t speaking Spanish, and you walk past a “Mexican” looking construction crew, you’ll notice they’re often speaking Tzotzil or a Mayan dialect.

    1. They are just not the same Native Americans that lived on the land which is now Washington, DC. It’s a completely different indigenous civilization. I know that Native Americans themselves find the distinction to be very important.

      1. Down here, many are, and out west. People who have been there since before Columbus, and people who are going back and forth on ancestral routes. This doesn’t make a post-Spanish Argentine, for example, a Native American, no. Down here, though, there’s a movement to call the creolized peoples of the area indigenous — not Native American, but still indigenous.
