Stay Ahead of the Woke

God, this is so true:

The most woke people here at my workplace seem to catch on to some new liberal party line about a year or more after I’ve first seen it out in the wilds of the internet- – I’m pretty sure it’s only when they’ve seen it enough times on TV that they adopt it and start parroting it themselves. I am always so far ahead of them in knowing what they are going to support, what they are going to claim all right-thinking people MUST people in The Current Year. These people have no frame of reference for anything other than TV — everything is put in terms of television — so conservatives are always “Fox News people” and Fox News is metonymically deployed to describe anything bad.

I laughed and laughed. The part about the TV is spot on.

The whole post is worth reading.

  1. Yeah, Dreher is a good writer when he’s not being a traditional conservative Catholic religious nut railing against abortion rights and LGBTQetc. people. Or about the possibly that his daughter might be drafted in a future war.

I really wish that conservative ideas weren’t so wrapped up with traditional religious doctrine. That’s where we part company.

      1. According to Eastern Orthodox liturgical and canonical texts, the official designation of the Eastern Orthodox Church is “the Orthodox Catholic Church.” So you and Dreher are both Catholics, just not the Western “Roman” ones!

Right now even the most socially libertarian, out there progressives I know think it’s vile. I literally don’t know anyone who supports it, and I know a lot of SJWs. But the media is pushing it. NewNextNow just published a screed against the Ohio legislators who are trying to ban kids from putting on sexual performances in bars.

      1. Right now the method seems to be saying that if you see anything sexualized about a child drag performance, YOU are some kinda pervert, seeing something sexual in complete innocence. I’ve seen people trying to defend this, the latest case in Ohio (I almost cried when watching it):

I do wonder whether this will be what finally proves to be a woke too far. I’d like to think so, but the progressive media trend setters have become so insane lately, who knows?

      1. There are a tiny minority of nuts in support already. I’ve noticed it’s mostly women; perhaps they see gay males of any age as a faaaaaaaabulous accessory. Gay men, meanwhile, remember being 9 and know that this isn’t a normal or healthy life for a gay preteen (assuming these kids are even gay.)

        1. There is also a large group of people who don’t actively support this but who are simply indifferent.

I asked somebody I know, “You have a son this age. How would you feel if this were him?” She said she’d be ok if this is what he wanted. I asked what if he said he wanted to smoke, would she buy him a pack of Camels? She got upset.

This is somebody who wages a constant war on students who use smartphones in the classroom. Even though they are adults who are doing what they want.

I’m not seeing any logic here.

          1. I know some people don’t know the reality of drag kids and assume it’s kids wearing age appropriate clothing in safe, all ages environments, not kids dressed up like prostitots dancing at bars in the wee hours. I had one friend with this false impression who went from indifference to indignation after I talked with them about it.

            1. Yes, I think of something like pantomime and don’t see crossdressing as inherently sexual.
If it’s more like striptease than that’s different.

I’m reminded of that video from about 8 years ago of 7 year old girls dancing to “Single ladies” while dressed like strippers (and demonstrating lots of stripper moves). A lot of women (not all, but a lot) seemed to find it all innocent good fun and if someone said the choreography was inappropriate they were accused of being perverts.

I’m thinking drag kids are neither the beginning nor any kind of culminating point but just another step downward on a set of stairs we got on a long time ago….

          1. I mean, people trying to deflect from child drag queens with whataboutism bring up child beauty pageants, etc., so there’s been creepy stuff going on a while. Sexualization of underage girls, on the whole, has lessened since the ’70s though. Back in the day rock stars openly had groupies who were 12, 13, 14, and would even sing songs about them (“I slept with Sable when she was 13/Her parents were too rich to do anything,”) I also don’t think cinema would sexualize a young girl today the way Brooke Shields was sexualized back in the 70s and 80s; I don’t see Pretty Baby or The Blue Lagoon being made today.

However, it may be a struggle to hold onto the progress we’ve made. Even if we successfully keep this filth out of mainstream media, much of pop culture is decentralized and happening on youtube, etc. For example, I’ve mentioned before that there’s a an adult youtuber who was dating a 13 year old boy. The vast majority of people who knew about this were opposed, and if she was a Hollywood actress this would probably be career ending, but she has a small devoted following and there are a few brands willing to sponsor her, so she gets by just fine. There’s all kinds of hidden corners of creepiness on youtube that are thriving.

Just after reading this I went on twitter and one of the first things that popped up was a young girl putting money in a stripper’s g-string*…. so I’m not so sure about that…

*to be clear, this was an angered retweet and not something that showed up on its own.

              1. I just saw the same post. This is why I say that it’ll be hard to hold onto progress. Mainstream media would still never condone something like this though, while in the 70s, 14 year old girls were openly sexualized in the mainstream media in a way they aren’t today. The average American was accepting of these things at the time, while almost nobody would approve of this picture of a child and a stripper. However, instead of being pushed to a dark shady corner, fringe beliefs and practices like these are gaining a following and sometimes becoming monetized thanks to social media.

The people you know don’t matter, the people who do matter like it and want more of it. I’ll let you imagine why that might be…

“a screed against legislators who are trying to ban kids from putting on sexual performances in bars”

If this were a clue on Jeopardy I’d give the answer “What is a sign of civilizational collapse?” although I think “What is a sign of absolute moral bankruptcy?” would also be acceptable….

    1. I mention these people I know because they are exactly the kind of bougie crowd that lines up behind this kind of thing. You’re right though, the media is presenting a united front on this issue. Whether or not it trickles down to idiot progressives in general, maybe that doesn’t matter much.
