Rocketman, Censored

Rocketman is being shown in Russia in a censored version. Sex scenes and drug use scenes were eliminated. As a result, some parts of the movie make no sense. When the protagonist starts behaving in a weird way because he’s in drugs, the Russian viewers have no idea what’s happening.

The final credit that informs viewers that Elton John met the love of his life and is raising children with him has also been eliminated.

Paramount is fully aware of the censorship and is not opposed to it.

    1. (From the linked article): “Children as young as 12 can opt for euthanasia in the Netherlands but only after a doctor determines that the patient’s pain is unbearable.”

This is beneath contempt — a “civilized” country that kills emotionally disturbed children at the child’s request. I literally can’t find the words to describe how wrong and disgusting this abuse of medical authority is. It makes me sick to my stomach to read it.

Allowing, let alone assisting, a mentally disturbed patient of ANY age to commit suicide purely because of the mental illness is never justified under any circumstances. You don’t treat mental illness by killing the patient!

      1. Absolutely. This would be an atrocity for a patient of any age but a child?

I hate the excessive use of the word Nazi but here it’s absolutely justified. The Nazis also believed that mental patients deserved death.

        I’m horrified by this.

      2. The famous “Doctors’ Trial” at Nuremburg after World War II put 20 German medical doctors on trial for, among other crimes, “euthanizing” mentally ill patients. Seven of the doctors received the death sentence and were executed. Now, a bit over seventy years later, medical standards in Europe have come full circle!

We reject in the strongest possible terms the decision to pander to local laws and censor Rocketman for the Russian market, a move we were unaware of until today. Paramount Pictures have been brave and bold partners in allowing us to create a film which is a true representation of Elton’s extraordinary life, warts and all. That the local distributor has edited out certain scenes, denying the audience the opportunity to see the film as it was intended is a sad reflection of the divided world we still live in and how it can still be so cruelly unaccepting of the love between two people. We believe in building bridges and open dialogue, and will continue to push for the breaking down of barriers until all people are heard equally across the world.

Russian Elton is presumably assumed to be a happily childless bachelor, content to share his life only with his own awkward framing devices.)“
What is this a Lindsay Graham biopic?

  2. Why bother showing Russian viewers the movie at all?
Why did Paramount even waste time, money and resources distributing copies to that country when they knew the officials there were just going to “butcher” the damn thing to shreds?

      1. It’s pretty ridiculous, too. Anybody who is interested in Elton John to the point of wanting to see a biopic is well-aware that he’s gay. It’s really not news. So what’s the point of censoring?
