Psyched Out

I had no idea it was ok to teach classes in “African-American psychology.” How about classes in “female psychology”, then? Or in “Caucasian psychology”? Or a comparative class in African and African American psychology?

Sounds a little outdated to me.

  1. I have a colleague who says that she is a specialist in “Asian psychology.” At first I thought it sounded bizarre. Did she think that there is something different about the “Asian” brain?! But I guess it’s probably a focus on how Asian culture and society influence the mindset of Asian people…. So it would be the anti-universalist approach to theories developed in the Humanities and Social Sciences, where universalism generally assumes a Western perspective by default.
