Ukrainian Scripts

I’m on the jury of movie scripts for the Ukrainian film industry. The scripts are in Russian or Ukrainian. We don’t discriminate on language grounds because nobody does that in Ukraine.

Half of the scripts we get feature pedophilia. The rest are based on saccharine WWII stories.

I was hoping things would be better in terms of mental health in Ukraine but judging by the scripts people are in a very bad place mentally.

    1. Based on who has qualified for the last 2019 primary debate so far it’s Biden, Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Steyer (why?). Bloomberg will qualify because he’ll buy his way in. (Again, why?)

      1. It’s only two months until voting begins, so I feel pretty confident in saying that Biden, Sanders, Warren, and Buttigieg are the only candidates with a chance at this point. Everyone else is polling in the single digits and it would take a miracle for them to become contenders.

Yikes! Where could this be coming from? Maybe they’ve internalized that there is a cultural preoccupation with it in the West?

    “saccharine WWII stories”

Nothing like keeping up with the times….

I had that same feeling about Spain a couple of years ago after seeing ‘La cueva’ and ‘El cadáver de Anna Fritz’ in the same week… Spain seems to have gotten a bit better since, let’s hope Ukraine can too.
The Ukrainian historical soap Крепостная was/is pretty popular in Poland. I saw one episode but it wasn’t my kind of thing….

I don’t know how to parse that sentence. Jury for what? How many film studios are there in Ukraine?

Are screenwriters/script writers drawn from a broader cross-section of Ukrainian society than people who write for the film industry here?
Judging from what I’ve read about the processes and the type of people who make it (actors, directors, screenwriters) they have higher percentages of certain mental problems than the general population.

    1. I’m not doing it for a specific film studio. The contest is run by the Academy of Arts and literature (the same one that awarded me the medal). This isn’t a commercial project because in Ukraine, as in many poorer European countries (Spain is an example), the film industry is not a 100% commercial enterprise. It’s heavily financed by the state because nobody expects to make a profit. You just can’t compete commercially with Hollywood. But the state also doesn’t want to hand over the work of culture-making to Hollywood. As a result, which movies get made is an issue of state funding.

I’ve been on juries for other genres, and you are absolutely right, the proportion of clearly disturbed people in this contest is a lot higher than I’ve seen among authors of short stories, essay, or novels.
