Nate’s TDSing

People asked me what TDS is. Here’s a classic example. It’s yesterday’s tweet from Nate Silver. He’s writing about the coronavirus stats:

Here’s another interesting comparison. Yesterday, detected cases increased by 31% in Trump states as compared to 21% in Clinton states.

If you don’t get why what’s happening to Nate is sad, you might have caught a bit of the TDS, too.

I used to like this guy. (Said I for the millionth time since TDS started affecting the population).

  1. “Yesterday, detected cases increased by 31% in Trump states as compared to 21% in Clinton states.”

Because citizens of Trump states receive better healthcare by getting tested more than Clinton is ready to provide for her supporters?

Because ‘Trump’ supporters are more educated (about the virus) and go to get tested?

Because, despite the multicultural rhetoric, Trumpists are the ones who come into contact with larger variety of people and thus have more chances to get infected than Clintonistas of economically segregated neighborhoods?

If anyone wants to offer more explanations to Nate, feel free to continue. 🙂

    1. Nate runs a political site called so he filters all kinds of stats through the prism of the Electoral College. He’d write something like that about any other recent electoral matchup you could name.

It is my longstanding theory that political stats geeks, especially those who get on tv or have a large following, are frustrated sports stats geeks who couldn’t get those jobs. Those jobs go to ex-players.

  2. Just seen an explanation where ‘coronavirus was created by Americans’ comes from. Don’t know whether people here have already read this; I haven’t re American scientists.

In 2015 an article was published on a major scientific website:

“A SARS-like cluster of circulating bat coronaviruses shows potential for human emergence”

In 2014 scientists from University of North Carolina and “Key Laboratory of Special Pathogens and Biosafety, Wuhan Institute of Virology” cooperated in creating a dangerous for humans virus out of not dangerous coronavirus of bats SHC014-CoV and reported:

«A SARS-like cluster of circulating bat coronaviruses shows potential for human emergence: we synthetically re-derived an infectious full-length SHC014 recombinant virus and demonstrate robust viral replication both in vitro and in vivo…»

The Russian blogger noted that the article in Nature reports the Wuhan laboratory had only third level of protection (BSL3) instead of the required 4th. Chinese researchers justified this by adding fans with UPS.

The scientific community reacted and in 2014 “a U.S. government moratorium was aimed at halting contraversial research with high-risk viruses.”

One source reports that it was “research designed to create PPP (potential pandemic pathogens) strains of influenza virus, the type of research that initially attracted attention, leading to the moratorium…”

Forbidden in America, the research continued in Wuhan. In 2019, Shi Zheng-Li , who continued working on the ‘problem’ of creating the new pandemic, diagnosed the first 27 cases.

There was an explanation of Chinese taking infected animals home from the lab. Cannot believe that – they knew the dangers.
