Good News Is Bad News

On the one hand, great news!

But on the other, if the economy starts recovering and even booming (which is very likely after a lockdown of this duration and nature), this will make the wokies even angrier. They will be even more motivated to do something even more outrageous. And since they own the media and are owned by those who control the digital economy, it’s going to be very easy to start another round of something very bad.

  1. they own the media

I’m starting to wonder how much that will help them. The current or former journalists I follow are pretty unanimous that journalism is in the process of collapsing.

One person who used to work for New York magazine made an interesting comment on the saying “Get woke, go broke” that you occasionally see around. He noted that, at least for media companies, this gets the causation backwards. Companies start to get woke because they’re going broke. Paying 23 year old freelance trolls to write outrage bait is cheap compared to employing actual journalists who write real stories, which is why failing companies resort to it. He claims that when you see a publication embrace aggressive wokesterism in a big way, that’s usually a sign that they’ve entered a financial death spiral.

  2. As others have pointed out: current progressive weirdness has a certain resemblance to the Ghost Dance religion. Maybe it’s just what happens when a movement or culture reaches its natural end, but nobody inside it wants to adapt to that reality and move on. They’re just going to put on their b̶u̶l̶l̶e̶t̶p̶r̶o̶o̶f̶ ̶s̶h̶i̶r̶t̶s̶ black masks, dance harder, and victory will descend on them because they are f̶a̶v̶o̶r̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶g̶o̶d̶s̶ on the right side of history.

  3. I know it is not done in America, but I shan’t apologize for being a grammar pedant: Good news IS bad news. Apart from that rather minor point, totally agree with you: nothing short of a revolution will satisfy the Wokies, including those whom the revolution will eventually devour. [Should I add that I am a teacher of English ?]
