The Ultimate Test

A professor is removed from his position for stating a fact.

Everybody (except for the most brainwashed) know that the professor spoke the truth. Even people who forced him to resign know it. What’s the purpose of faking outrage against him, then?

Well, the way it works is that everybody has to prove allegiance to the regime by loudly defending things they know to be untrue. You are of no use if you parrot the parts of the dogma you have sincerely accepted. No, you have to go against what you absolutely know to be true.

And you have to prove your complete loyalty by denouncing a friend or a relative over a belief you share. That’s the ultimate test.

Unless you can do that, you’ll get no peace. You’ll be pushed and goaded and forced to accept increasingly monstrous lies.

  1. In related news, I feel very cynical about the new American hero – far all his faults, Washington is more inspiring:

// According to TMZ, Floyd’s brother, Philonise recently submitted an application to trademark the phrase, ‘The George Floyd Foundation.’

If it’s approved, the Floyd family will be able to use it to educate the public about police reform and to support families who’ve fallen victim to police brutality.

The trademark approval would also give the family flexibility to sell branded merchandise with the phrase.

    1. A guy who assaulted a pregnant woman at gunpoint. This is the person who now symbolizes the black community. What a win for racial justice.

The guy’s only achievement in life is providing white people with a pretext to act as total dicks. This tells us all we need to know about these fans of racial justice.

  2. Since you’re a professor and may have to do exams in zoom too next year:

Моя ученица сдала сессию в МГУ. По зуму сдавала, и почти на всех экзаменах преподаватели заставляли студентов закрывать глаза, когда отвечают. Чтобы не считывали с экрана ответ. Факультет гуманитарный.
Интересный лайфхак. Я сама до такого не додумалась. У меня теперь тоже все ученики с закрытыми глазами отвечать будут.

But there is a way to cheat too:

“Возможна видеонакладка бегущей строки с подсказками прямо на изображение препода. Чего он, конечно, со своей стороны не видит.”

    1. I have this problems with f2f teaching, too. It’s extremely hard to get some students to talk and not read during presentations. As many times as I tell them to stop reading, they still do it.

  3. I have nothing to add to the discussion here, but WP is broken and will not let me “like” this post. But this is what I want everybody I know to read and understand about what’s going on with “cancel culture” right now.

  4. Re parroting the dogma, my respect for JKR has significantly increased. You have heard JKR was accused of being transphobic, but now I read her wonderful essay responding to the allegations and publicly stating beliefs and statistics on trans rights which are likely to get one cancelled.

I’ve previously read many things she says in her essay on your blog, but that’s one of the few times a celebrity is ready to take social risks and stand for women’s rights and things she believes in.

For instance, JKR is “concerned about the huge explosion in young women wishing to transition and also about the increasing numbers who seem to be detransitioning … Some say they decided to transition after realising they were same-sex attracted, and that transitioning was partly driven by homophobia, either in society or in their families.”

The entire essay is beautifully written and it’s evident she has researched the topic.

// And you have to prove your complete loyalty by denouncing a friend or a relative over a belief you share.

This element is true for JKR case too, alas.

Daniel Radcliffe, who became super rich and known worldwide thanks to JKR’s books (wouldn’t have done it without this role, I am sure, he isn’t that great as an actor) decided to prove allegiance by publicly denouncing JKR.

He felt “compelled to say something” so stated “Transgender women are women” because of “advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

I especially didn’t like his ‘apology’ for JKR comments:

“To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. ”
