Comedy Is Dead

I googled this person. She’s completely real. Unsurprisingly, she’s declaredly anti-kids.

  1. I wonder how representative these kind of posts and people really are. I keep seeing people on both sides of the spectrum saying and doing very stupid stuff. However, in my personal experience and judging by the real world people I deal with, I (thankfully) have never met these types. So I do wonder to what extend social media just amplifies the extreme and worst side of us.

    1. I’m in academia. It’s about 80% like this.

But I’m hearing from people in the business world that is getting even worse there. So we are sitting pretty. :-))

  2. Clarissa, I got a bit curious about this “@KimyaNDennisPhD” that you showed in your post. Apparently she got banned from twitter:

And from what I can see from the responses, the vast majority of people are disagreeing with her.

What this shows me is these type of people (@KimyaNDennisPhD) are on the fringes of society and the academic world, and they should remain there.

    1. And you think that since such views are extreme and only held by a few , “marginal”, outlier types this means that we are safe from the madness of the crowds ? Well, you’ve got another think coming…

  3. Clearly, someone has never read a certain German-Jewish convert to Christianity named Heinrich Heine. He had some thoughts about where book burning leads to. He was a white man and all so he has nothing to teach us about oppression. 🙂

  4. Remember your offer to rename the Democratic party? 🙂

// Ann Coulter is pushing a brilliant campaign to compel Yale University to change its name:
“How about a bill withholding all federal funds from Yale University until it changes its name? The school’s namesake, Elihu Yale, was not only a slave owner, but a slave trader.”

Yale changed the name of Calhoun College in 2017, because its namesake, 19th century Yale alumnus John C. Calhoun, was pro-slavery. So why is Yale not jettisoning its name? Why the hypocrisy?

Yale was founded as the “Collegiate School,” before changing its name to Yale in honor of a major donor. Why not switch back to Collegiate School?

    1. They think it’s a great own until it works and those dumb bastards really do change the name. I kind of care given that I have a bunch of diplomas from there.

You don’t have anything to worry about in your current position, do you? Even if they do change the name, it won’t hurt you.

Imo, the campaign for renaming Yale will affect the new ‘destroy everything old’ trend like accusing Biden affected MeToo. 🙂 Don’t believe for a second they’ll lose an international brand and hurt the prestige of their chidlren’s degrees.

Things on the fringes of society/academia tend to move to the center unless somehow prevented from doing so.

Back in 2015 or so I recall being assured that the whole trend of people manipulating institutions by melodramatically declaring themselves to feel “unsafe” was just a bunch of silly college kids being kids and had nothing to do with the real world. Now those same tactics are being used to call the shots at the New York Times.

    1. Exactly. For years we have been hearing how this is unimportant, it’s just silly kids on a couple of campuses, who cares. And now several cities are burning because nobody thought this would go mainstream.

The “somehow” is the tricky part for sure. I am of the mind that we pay too much attention to them just by acknowledging them. These people feed on our attention, anger, and emotions so I tend to just ignore them. I think if more people do the same they would lose a lot of their power.

For example, we use Arabic numerals (0, 1, 2, 3, etc…these are Arabic symbols). The word algebra comes from the The word algebra comes from the Arabic “Al-Jabr” from the book by the Persian mathematician and astronomer al-Khwarizmi. The word “algorithm” also derives from this. The words “geometry” and “trigonometry” derive from Greek.
