The Left Goes Libertarian

The federal government is finally sending forces to Portland to stop the violent destruction that’s been taking place for weeks.

Crowds of people are upset and are clamoring for even more welfare to be withdrawn instead.

A few years ago, only the most hardcore libertarian websites would argue that it’s a great thing to let gangs of violent goons roam around assaulting, looting, murdering and robbing without any state involvement. The market should sort it all out, they said. Those who can hire private bodyguards or move to a gated community should be safe. And everybody else should be screwed.

Now this is a mainstream liberal / leftist position.

    destruction”

WHAT violent destruction? I don’t see evidence of it anywhere except on Fox News, which everybody knows is far-right propaganda. If you turn on CNN, you’ll see the distraught Portland mayor practically crying on television, telling Andrew Cuomo how federal troops tear-gassed him while he was trying to bond with all the peaceful protesters that he fervently supports.

If the coronavirus is successfully waging a campaign to push voters toward Biden, the never-ending rioters are working just as hard to get Trump re-elected.

Hope you share with us since I’ve only heard utterly weird and insane things which cannot be the whole truth.

I googled and some ideas are sound. For instance,

      “Move police out of schools
Kindergarten to Grade 12 students across North America have become accustomed to having police present at school through programming like school liaison officer, school resource officer or DARE programs (drug awareness). According to the American Civil Liberties Union, 1.7 million children in the U.S. attend a school with police present but without access to counsellors.”

      1. As AOC said, “without police, cities will look exactly like suburbs!” Meaning, crime-free, safe and peaceful.

There are several generations of Democrats who sincerely think that jails are full because police are evil. They completely sincerely believe that once police goes away, there will be no crime. In the suburbs, they say, there’s little police presence yet no crime. Ergo, police causes crime.

I know such people in person. Actually, let me qualify. I only know such people. There’s a complete, bovine consensus among everybody I know that there is more crime in South Bronx than in Westchester because there’s more police there. Suggesting to them that there’s more police because there’s more crime … well, I haven’t tried because I like having a job.

These are people who have believed their own bullshit. If you sincerely believed and knew not a single person who disagreed and never heard of an alternative viewpoint, it would be harder not to demand an abolition of police either.

And before you say that these people are nuts to believe this. What other explanation can you give of the gigantic disparities in crime rates between my neighborhood and one 15 miles away?

I suppose your question is rhetorical. Surely, there are more options that either blaming the police for gangs’ existence or the racist ‘explanation’ citing supposed genetic inferiority.

There are many old, standard Left answers stressing class, the history of slavery, the continued discrimination, etc. One doesn’t need to think at all to choose to use them instead of the very recently emerged ‘police are to blame’ narrative.

Obviously, I don’t think anybody is genetically inferior. That’s insane. But inventing these waves of police brutality against blacks is also insane.

I have a friend who’s an immigrant from Africa. He’s bought into these lies and is now terrified to leave the house. I’m trying to tell him that with his very high income and in the very nice neighborhood he lives, he’s not at risk. But he’s convinced that “this society is terrible to black people.” Even though he belongs to the highest achievement group among immigrants in the US and his income is 3 times what an average US family earns. (He’s in a healthcare profession).

Yeah, I’m sure that within a few years they’ll be saying that the reason cities aren’t like the suburbs is because of insufficient willpower…. (the old Green Lantern theory….).

      2. And here is why the seemingly sound idea about taking police out of schools is rubbish:

I highly suggest people enter search terms “gangs” and “high school / middle school” into Google. The idea that some “counselor” can protect kids from a gang that chops up 12-year-olds with machetes and whose slogan is “kill, rape, control” is… yeah.

        1. Yes, I can see it, thanks. It’s always the same excuse. It wasn’t the right socialism, it wasn’t the right protest, it wasn’t the right Chaz. If only somebody finally did it right, it would be great.

          It’s beyond childish.

  3. Clarissa, this sounds like exactly your movie. Whether it’s good or not, this journalist was a true hero and the world will know about Holodomor when Ukraine is in need of Western support at present:

“I’ll be watching Mr. Jones, a new film out on Netflix after its theatrical release was botched by Covid-19. It’s about a brave Welsh journalist in the 1930s Soviet Union who faced down Stalin and his lackey Walter Duranty, the New York Times‘s Moscow correspondent, and reported honestly on the Holodomor ”

    1. I’m going to watch but honestly, what do we care in Ukraine who in the West knew about Holodomor and when? It did nothing for us either way.

The West is neither the villain or the hero of the Holodomor story. It’s simply not about them. Which, as usual, they can’t stand.

        1. Germany is the West. But I understand what you mean. The analogy isn’t ideal because the knowledge and the acceptance that the Holocaust was real was crucial for the Jews who were trying to escape to the US, for instance. It was crucial for the creation of and support for Israel. There was a lot that people could do from the outside.

In the case of Ukraine, there was and is nothing that awareness could do. It’s good that people know but it’s not having any impact on anything.

It could have an impact on people’s willingness to repeat Russian propaganda such as ‘spheres of influence’ ideology.

It could make them more willing to help Ukraine in the present.

    // Germany is the West.

    Russia and Ukraine are too.

    1. “Russia and Ukraine are too”

No, they’re really not. Ukraine is developing what you might call western aspirations but is a long way from getting there. Poland has had western aspirations for hundreds of years and is not all the way there yet (getting pretty close, but…. not there yet).
Russia is the textbook example of a non-western power – with no civil society or robust institutions, it’s all big man politics….

      1. Yeah, Russians hate the word “West,” they hate the concept, these are people who are not trying to be part of the West. They have a different thing going on, and I say let them, as long as they don’t try to force their model onto other people.

        1. “as long as they don’t try to force their model onto other people”

But forcing themselves on other people is an integral part of their thing. What I’ve read from modern pro-Russian types in English (some of them pretty articulate and intelligent besides Putin-philia) indicates they have a kind of… lust for imposing their vision of the world on others fully knowing that others don’t want that.
Americans at least have the (bad) excuse of thinking that anyone exposed to American values and ways of doing things will find both irresistible. Russians know their model is unappealing and still want to force it on other places (starting but not ending with Ukraine).
