Insensitive

Is it true that Obama talked about doing away with the filibuster while giving a eulogy today?

The last argument against Trump – that he’s crude, self-serving, insensitive and impervious to human emotions – begins to lose meaning because if that’s everybody, then it doesn’t matter.

Yes, Obama gave an angry, partisan political speech during his “eulogy” at Lewis’ funeral today, and among other things, he said that the Senate filibuster is a racist relic of the Jim Crow era.

Yes, he did say this, and he is right, historically. Southern Senators used the filibuster to keep black people oppressed for decades. That was almost its only function at the time. His speech was not angry. I suppose it was partisan seeming to you if your goal in life is to keep black people from ever having equal citizenship rights with white people.

Oh, go to hell. Obama’s tone was definitely angry, and his words were clearly politically “partisan” to anybody who knows the definition of that common English word.

The filibuster serves the very useful purpose of slowing major legislation in the Senate and forcing a reasonable consensus for passage, as opposed to the simple majority required in the lower House.

        1. It is kind of dehumanizing to turn a person’s funeral into a pouting match for airing some trivial procedural grievances. I don’t think anybody here would want a funeral of their family member to be used as a platform to debate congressional procedure.
