What’s the Plan?

Why would the looting stop if nobody is stopping it? What is the expectation here? That people will tire of getting opportunities to steal Louis Vuitton bags?

I’m trying to figure out what all the people who oppose federal troops being sent to stop the rioting are thinking. I’m asking this in good faith. What’s the plan? I’m far removed from the circles that support the “protests,” and I’d like to know what people are thinking.

There’s a pile of dead bodies. Chicago already has 150 more murders this year than at the same moment of 2019. Several cities suffered massive damage. Residents are terrified. Local authorities are clearly incapable of doing anything because it’s been over two months and it’s only getting worse. Every concession has been made to the rioters in Portland and Seattle but the rioting continues. What’s the endgame?

  1. “What’s the endgame?”

Slow boil chaos on all fronts until November 4th to portray Trump as weak, ineffectual, incompetent yet vainglorious, to independent voters.

  2. Pretty sure GSW is right about the actual goal. But would like to hear what the stated goals are, from someone on the “pro” side. Nothing about it makes any sense to me, in terms of something you’d want to support for noble reasons.

    1. There don’t seem to be any stated goals. The stated position is that these people have been forced to riot because of the inequities of the system and we deserve it for not doing better by them. Instead of sending in force to suppress them, we should be completely overhauling the system to better serve their interests.

The underlying assumption is often stated as ‘hurt people hurt people’: the only reason they are hurting us is because we hurt them before in other ways. And if we stop doing that, they will stop rioting. The noble savage. Also why they are advocating for prison shutdown.

      1. I believe that “hurt people hurt people.” But that’s true of serial killers too, who were generally abused as children. We don’t let them run around free! But yes, that is their poorly thought out logic.

    2. “right about the actual goal…” (thanks!)

The key here is, as Clarissa correctly notes, “nobody is stopping it.” It’s absolutely intentional — as it all could be “stopped” in 24 hours if Democratic Party authorities didn’t see a clear benefit to themselves in allowing it to continue nation-wide.

In this sense, the “stated goals” of the looters/rioters don’t matter – these goals don’t determine anything as their power is on licence from the responsible authorities and could be withdrawn at any moment.

      1. Right, but I have nice white liberal friends who are all-in on the mostly-peaceful protesting, and even from them, I can’t get any sense of what they want out of it. What’s it for? What are they telling themselves to justify their support? I don’t know. I’d like to know.

  3. The tone has changed, judging by those remarks, and the looting will soon be stopped, no matter who wins the elections. Interesting how fast will the Democratic party follow suit?

// Aftermath of looting in downtown Chicago: 13 cops injured, 2 people shot, more than 100 arrests, Mag Mile trashed

“What occurred in our downtown and surrounding communities was abject criminal behavior, pure and simple,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said. “And there cannot be any excuse for it. Period.”

“This was not an organized protest,” [Chicago Police Superintendent David] Brown said. “Rather this was an incident of pure criminality. This was an act of violence against our police officers and against our city.”

“What we’re saying is, as a result of what happened last night, there have to be consequences,” Lightfoot said. “We’ve got teams of people that are aggressively out there identifying the people responsible, looking at the plates, and we’re going to bring them to justice.

“But when we do make those arrests, our expectation is that this is going to be treated with the level of seriousness it should be. Period,” she said. “Don’t try to bait us, mischaracterize, pit one against the other, we’re not playing that. We’re in a serious situation here and we need a serious response. That’s what we’re saying.”

“No, we do not need federal troops in Chicago, period, full stop,” Lightfoot said. “I’m sure the president will have his way with this incident but I’m calling upon him to do the things that we do need (such as gun control).”

“I don’t care, I do not care, whatever justification was given for this,” Lightfoot said. “There is no justification for criminal behavior, ever. You have no right to take and destroy the property of others. Our residents deserve to be safe. Our businesses deserve to understand and enjoy safety and security of their property and their employees. Our police officers deserve to be able to do their job without having to worry about shots being fired, projectiles being thrown, and being maced. This is not anywhere near acceptable.”

  4. Very good article that every conservative should read:

    https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/conservatism-is-a-collection-of-losers-it-doesnt-have-to-be/

“The conservative favorite Lord Acton famously quipped that power corrupts, but as the self-described Marxist Slavoj Žižek is fond of pointing out, powerlessness corrupts, too. One effect of conservatives’ waning economic and social power has been a retreat into their own self-referential identity groups and subcultures—bizarre little cults ranging from Straussians to Burkeans to the various branches of “Austrian economics.” Conservatives applaud themselves for this apparent devotion to “ideas,” but it’s actually just an effect—and a cause—of their irrelevance with respect to matters of practical importance and almost total intellectual incoherence.”

  5. The change in Democratic reportage has already arrived. From comments to Rod’s post re Chicago:

“The NYT (!) ran a story today on splits in the City Council where a number of black and latino councilors representing high crime parts of the city are opposed to further cuts to the police.”

“Defund the police” motto has already transformed from the latest required woke slogan into “colonization” by white progressives and “political gentrification.”

The reader published this quote from NYT article (guess it’s behind a paywall, so…):

// With New York City on the cusp of cutting $1 billion from the Police Department, a city councilwoman, Vanessa L. Gibson, told her colleagues that enough was enough.

She acknowledged that some Council members, spurred by the movement to defund the police, were seeking to slash even more from the department’s budget. But she pointed out that her constituents did not agree.

They “want to see cops in the community,” Ms. Gibson said.

“They don’t want to see excessive force. They don’t want to see cops putting their knees in our necks,” she said. “But they want to be safe as they go to the store.”

Laurie Cumbo, a Black councilwoman from Brooklyn who is majority leader, compared calls to defund the police to “colonization” pushed by white progressives. Robert Cornegy Jr., a Black councilman also from Brooklyn, called the movement “political gentrification.”

  6. Something that stood out was the tweet Rod linked to: “Looter shouts “I can’t breathe” as she runs through store looking for something to remove security tags.”

What if every criminal adopta those words in dealings with police from now on? How can police 100% know the truth?

Btw, liked Demotrash’s link re “Very good article that every conservative should read.” Clarissa, since you define yourself as a conservative (?) now, what is your reaction / answer to this article?

This is Rod’s post if someone is interested:
