Another First

I’ve never been a fan of Trump’s tweets, and that’s putting it mildly, but I absolutely love this one:

I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!

We have let our lives be stolen from us over irrational, ridiculous fears. I haven’t seen my family in Canada since December. That’s 4 encounters with her grandparents that have been stolen from my kid. Four prolonged stays while the grandparents are active, healthy and can play and run around with her. I don’t know how many such encounters we have left. I’m livid over all this. How the people are feeling whose livelihoods were taken away I can’t even imagine.

    1. We have a similar situation here (I am in the US; my parents are in the UK: they were supposed to visit in March… not sure when we’ll see them again). It is not so much my kids I feel sorry for but my parents who are truly missing some of the last chances they will have to spend quality time with their grandchildren (my parents are in their mid 70s). On the plus side, the kids have shown dramatic improvements in ability to interact over Zoom…

  1. Assuming arguendo he’s not lying his face off, that tweet raises the question of how lousy his health was twenty years ago when he could string together more fluid, complex sentences.

I don’t know why everyone is losing their fucking minds over Trump’s covid. How many world leaders or their spouses have had covid and pulled through? Didn’t Justin Trudeau(‘s wife) and Boris Johnson have covid? I don’t remember the Canadians and Brits falling to pieces, or did I forget?

As for the canceled trips to the grandparents? I know you said you’d have to quarantine on each end. Would you have considered the unaccompanied minor program if she were old enough? I completely understand why you wouldn’t.

    1. Trudeau’s wife and Boris are a lot younger. The whole thing with this virus is that it becomes dangerous once you hit the age of 70. Or the weight of 250 lbs.

As an old mother of an only child, I’m not letting her travel alone until she’s 50. Or I croak. Whatever comes first. 🙂

Boris Johnson ended up in the ICU before he recovered. Are you basing this dangerous weight on your height?

She’s gonna hitch a ride on a steamer or take your car for a joyride before then, you know. :-p

  2. I hear you. I am in the process of figuring out how to go see my family in the middle of this stupid pandemic. I am now hopeful that it is going to be possible. I will loose time to the quarantine and traveling alone with a small child is not going to be fun, but I do not know how much longer my parents will be around and I am not going to wait any longer. Fortunately, my university compressed the Fall semester and we will be done before Thanksgiving, so I will make an attempt to travel during our unusually long winter break.

      1. I believe they should let you in. If I were you, I would contact a Canadian consulate and ask them, they will be able to tell you.

      2. “Can they refuse to let me in?”

My quick scan of the current regulations says no. And, your spouse and dependent child would also be admitted based on your Canadian citizenship

However, you and your family would have to present a plan to quarantine yourselves for 14 days before you could visit your family.

(Presumably, this is just a ruse designed to slow the flood of Americans who will be claiming refugee status if the November election doesn’t go the way they want. Or, possibly, hordes of religiously observant NYC residents who mistakenly believe that they are entitled to gather in groups of the like-minded and pray.)

  3. So, has someone explained to the President (very slowly and patiently, using simple words, images, and maybe a puppet or two) about how steroids work…?

    1. Do you know what percentage of American children weren’t in school today? Do you know what percentage has already fallen hopelessly behind and will never catch up? Or not interested in the subject at all?
