The Other Side

In the meantime, Kamala Harris has announced that 220 million Americans died in the last few months.

Given that COVID-mongering is her ticket’s entire platform, this isn’t a slip of the tongue. Both she and Biden have made this “mistake” several times.

  1. “Harris has announced”

This is what I mean by substandard elites…. the Democratic party leaders thought the best they could do was a senile old man with a corrupt drug addict influence-peddling son and a woman who resonated so little with voters that she had to drop out of the race before the first primary and whose main claim to fame was throwing poor people in jail?
It’s not like the Republicans are much better but they’re not in a death spiral (and if Biden wins that’s more or less exactly what I expect….).

  2. If people were even remotely numerate, they’d laugh those jokers off stage.

But they don’t. It’s painfully obvious numbers mean nothing: all people hear is something scary. 2,000, 200,000, 200,000,000 – all are just big scary numbers. Evidently, almost no one has any concept of scale.

I wonder how many people could tell you, without looking it up, how many people live in the US, or in the world? Then, without using a calculator, within an order of magnitude, how big a percentage 200,000 or 200,000,000 is of those numbers. Not asking for accuracy – just do they have a rough idea that 200,000 is considerably less than 0.1% of 330M, and that 200M is about 2/3 of everybody in the US.

Saw yesterday on Twitter someone bemoaning a waste of $1.75B by saying that was enough to give every American $500M dollars, which is only 7 orders of magnitude off. I would think they were kidding, but I see this often enough to think not.
