In-class Revelation

I asked students to list the most surprising things they learned in our course.

The #1 winner was finding out that Communism never existed anywhere on Earth and that the USSR wasn’t a Communist society and never claimed to be.

It was a revelation that the USSR was a socialist country – one of the very few purely socialist countries in the world – and that “socialism is actually that bad.”

  1. In a better world, your lectures on the topic would be circulated widely.

…but in this one you’d probably be cancelled and labelled with something nasty, sadly.

        1. I wish all faculty had the same standards and ability to challenge/question their own party-affiliated beliefs. Regardless, I assume you back up your facts with peer-reviewed articles, evidence through research, comparative data. Wouldn’t it be hard to cancel you then?

The danger with that of course is that leads fools to still believe “It’s never been tried! If only I were in charge I know I could make it work…. I know it!!!!”

  3. Didn’t hunter-gatherer tribes live in a form of communism? There often seems to be a line of thought on the left promoting a return to some idealized prehistoric state.
