I know it’s just a joke, but our big ag regulations really do treat poultry that way. People who raise pastured (i.e. outdoor) poultry get all kinds of flak from regulators and giant-chicken-house growers because “OMG they’ll socialize with pigeons and get bird flu!” Despite the fact that all available evidence says the pastured birds are 100x healthier from being outside and eating bugs and grass and not being crowded into tiny spaces with zillions of other birds, continually breathing ammonia and feather and fecal particulates, and are far healthier, less pathogen-ridden, and more immunologically resilient than the gross chicken-house birds. More nutritious, too!
