The Jason Arday Drama

Ohio State University says it has no record of Cambridge’s embattled sociology professor Jason Arday being a ‘Visiting Professor’ there, despite the claim appearing on his Cambridge University profile.

It’s very funny that the poor bugger had to fake being a Visiting Professor, which, in case people don’t know, is not prestigious at all at Ohio State.

If you are not following the story of Jason Arday, you should. The guy is a pathological liar who DEI-ed his way into a professorship at Cambridge. He invented all sorts of really bizarre achievements for himself, such as, for example, running a 12-day marathon on a broken leg or something like that. With one or two exceptions, the faculty at Cambridge are still slobbering over the guy and defending this liar and plagiarist.

By the way, has everybody noticed that I now add categories to every post? Are they useful? This is aimed at making it easier to search posts with similar topics.

    He resigned last night (Wednesday), thankfully.

    I’m not even sure about the damage to the reputation of Cambridge University (I’m an alumnus) at this point. In the Humanities it’s mostly neo-Marxism all the way, so the damage has already been done and there is little to salvage.

      And his resignation letter was written entirely by AI. The poor dumbass can’t even write a ten-line resignation letter by himself. A British journalist was almost arrested to cover up this hoax. Serious good scholars were tarnished as racists to protect Arday. This is beyond shameless.

      And it’s Cambridge. My heart hurts to see one of the greatest glories of Western civilization defiled in this way.

    He was found dead last weekend. So, I guess it is not a drama, but a tragedy.

      It gets worse. Yesterday, a crowd assembled in Trafalgar Square, making unhinged threats to Nate Cofnas, the professor who first revealed Arday’s prevarications. Previously, a journalist who tried to investigate Arday was persecuted by police.

    It is all a terrible, tragic mess, really. One person died. I can think about many professors who created a career based on nothing or very little, and even on lies, but that would have never been investigated like Cofnas did with Arday. I could give names to Cofnas, but that would not make such a good story as Arday’s you know? At the same time, I cannot help but to think that it is not normal to get a full professorship at 38 years old, and that Arday mistakenly accepted to play a game he was not equipped to play. It is just awful, regardless of the ideological standpoints used to analyze the situation.

      There is no likelihood that he would be given a full professorship at Cambridge with his record of publication if he weren’t black. Even if the publications hadn’t been plagiarized, this is not the kind of CV that leads to a university of this caliber at the highest rank.

      I know a guy who lied about having tenure and was accepted into a job with tenure, so he never went through the tenure process. But it wasn’t Cambridge that hired him. It was my university. One expects better from Cambridge.

      The guy I’m talking about ended up as a dean somewhere in New Jersey. Better them than us, is all I can say.

      Arday was a perfect storm, usually those who create a career on nothing or even lies have the good sense to maintain a reasonably low profile.

      Even if the plagiarism wasn’t so blatant with his ‘work’ he routinely said crazy things that no reasonably sane person could believe….

      The plagiarism, fantasies and outsize public profile were all too much to look past.

      My own theory is that he knew how to push white liberals’ buttons (so to speak) and they felt virtuous by promoting him. I’m sorry he’s dead but the of him as a Cambridge Professor degraded the whole institution.

      And…. is there any comment about cause of death? It seems to be avoided…

        What I find fascinating is that he put a lot more work into inventing illnesses for himself than into inventing academic credentials. This is a man who wanted to be perceived as a suffering, ailing victim of a wide collection of diseases. I think he might have had Munchhausen. And of course, this persona pressed all of the pleasure buttons of motherly middle-aged ladies who promoted him. I saw the famous video of the department chair at Cambridge greeting him. The vibe is bizarre and disturbing. If the genders were reversed and an older male academic happened to be on camera acting like this to a younger female hire, there would be a huge scandal.

          But in that case there’s usually some attempt to manifest the symptoms at least… in his case he just said his leg swole up (no photographic evidence) or that he had a brain tumor and forgot everything (again no evidence).

          I didn’t want to be that overt, but…. yeah…. it was very disturbing.

            Everything that’s crossed my newsfeed made him sound like a garden variety conman/compulsive liar. Back in my day they claimed to be developing amazing new tech for the military, or to have access to fabulous wealth. Only in academia do you get to the top by claiming to be the most disadvantaged cripple…

              The guy misused the apostrophe in the title of his doctoral dissertation. It’s a third-grade mistake. The whole thing is a clown show.

                I have not looked, but I would bet there are a zillion people out there defending the apostrophe, because “that means it’s not AI” and “You can be smart without grammaring good” etc.

                But, you know, decent human beings have these things called competent friends, who will do stuff like glance at your dissertation and tell you about a dumb typo right in the title.
