“The trajectory of drug overdose deaths during Joe Biden’s presidency (January 2021 to January 2025) split into two distinct phases: deaths surged to record highs during the first half (2021–2022), plateaued in 2023, and then dropped dramatically in 2024. By the end of his term, overall drug fatalities and fentanyl deaths were falling at the steepest rate recorded in modern U.S. history.”
These deaths were already dropping dramatically by 2024 before Trump took over
We had a better economy and lower prices though.

The drop in drug overdoses during Biden happened because he was handing out Narcan to addicts. Narcan only works for opioids. It does not help with overdoses from cocaine and meth. Setting that aside, tolerating the presence of vast networks of drug lords and bringing the victims back to consciousness so that they can keep consuming drugs is immoral. Trump’s solution not only reversed the growing numbers of overdoses from all drugs, not just opioids, but also took the more moral route of preventing drug lords from operating.
Have been casually tracking these numbers. Not sure whether to attribute it to lower availability or just… fent finally killed off enough of the vulnerable population that there were fewer left to overdose?
I mean, really hoping it’s lower availability, and that border enforcement is actually making a dent in it. But everything I’ve read about fent and the new meth says… if that didn’t work, the other thing was going to happen. The problem with fentanyl is that it’s getting mixed in with everything else, so even people who think they’re doing coke are probably also doing fent. Fentanyl and the new extra-pure meth are different from previous generations of drugs in that users do not “hit rock bottom” and seek help before dying or becoming brain damaged, for the most part. The few who shake loose from it almost always do so thanks to a stint in jail.
Got to explain the “fent fold” to my kids last week. Passed an older gent, gray hair, grubby sweatsuit, standing on the sidewalk along a main road, bent, arms hanging, dead to the world. Three kids with backpacks were headed up the sidewalk on the other side of the road– school about two blocks away.
