I am glad that the televised execution of the Muslim terrorist has been cancelled. It was a bad idea. However, announcing the execution and then unannouncing it is awkward and ridiculous. You end up getting all of the blowback for something that, in the end, you don’t even do. You disappoint everybody who is in favor and receive all of the flak from everybody who is opposed.

This is a minor thing, so who cares? But the approach is similar to what happened with the war against Iran. There is a definite and clear lack of thinking things through.

Let’s attack them and see what happens.

What if they close the Strait of Hormuz?

Well, let’s attack them and see what happens.

We attacked them. They closed the Strait of Hormuz. Now nobody knows what to do.

Of course, compared to what the Democrats offer, this is all extremely minor. That goes without saying. I’m voting up-and-down-ballot Republican, not only in November but for the rest of my life. But we need to be more disciplined and less scatterbrained.

If only this wasn’t seriously hurting people right now, I would agree it is “extremely minor.”

Look at what’s happening in Ukraine now where the administration is hampering Ukraine’s war efforts at a moment where they need support. Totally brain dead.

I agree with what you say Clarissa, but I really don’t understand how you can view any of this as “minor.” It’s extremely troubling and problematic and with serious long term repercussions.

I didn’t say it was minor. I said it was minor compared to what the Democrats offer. We don’t have a choice between Republicans and something better. We have a choice between Republicans and something utterly horrid. How would reopening the border and accusing everybody of being racist help with any of the existing issues? Because that is the extent of what the Democrats are offering: abolish ICE, open the border, legalize illegal immigrants (which means invite millions more to come in), and lecture everybody about racism, sexism, and all the rest of it again.

Here is what the Democrats are openly proposing to do:

Imagine what the actual plan is if this is the visible part of the iceberg.

meh. I had no interest in watching it, but I’m still not sure it was a bad idea. Broadcasting video of blowing up drug boats seems to have had a real deterrent effect. Why not terrorists also?

Yet another brain dead policy that is also not working at all. Cocaine has never been as plentiful, cheap, and pure as it is today:

“Why U.S. Airstrikes Are Failing to Stop the Global Cocaine Boom Smugglers are shifting routes and using new tactics to evade military targeting, resulting in record supplies, plunging prices and high purity in the U.S. and Europe”

-Do you consider the WSJ an unbiased source on this subject?
-Cocaine really isn’t my top concern. The admin, whatever it’s doing (land and sea border enforcement is a big piece, certainly not the only piece), does seem to be making inroads on the meth/fentanyl problem, which has huge QoL effects on… basically everybody who doesn’t live in an upscale HOA. Yes, yes “those were cocaine boats not fent” (say the chorus of people who claimed those boats were definitely innocent fishing vessels out for a night cruise in ̶e̶e̶l̶ shark-infested waters…). I don’t care. Those videos were an obvious PR element of a much larger and somewhat successful attempt to haul the enforcement apparatus back around to seriously addressing the very large cross-border drug problem. I don’t mind in the least that the PR videos were distasteful. They obviously weren’t posted for my benefit.

Ditto for the idea of public executions. I’m not upset about the cancellation. But also wasn’t opposed to giving it a try. Obviously not as the only anti-terrorism measure. But… seems at least more logical than dropping off pallet-loads of cash, immediately-embezzled USAID programs, or sporadic bombings.

People have been bringing up the new short-lived WH press secretary. And yes, she’s embarrassing, stupid, ridiculous. Looks like a hooker. I’m not noticing much difference from Karine Jean-Pierre. But that’s not an excuse. We should be better. At the same time this is such a minuscule and unimportant thing in comparison with defunding usaid, stopping the cartels, closing the border.

It would be great if everything were perfect, and then we could care about press secretaries and other trivial things like that, but it’s a lot more complicated. We have to concentrate on the big things first.

One of the great things about not really being compatible with video formats is… I could not possibly care less about the WH press secretary. That’s a thing for TV people. I’m not TV people. It also spares me most of the hysterics and counter-hysterics about whatever embarrassing press conference happened today. Didn’t watch it. Not going to watch it. It’s simply not part of my universe and I don’t care. Ever since 2020 this weird and sort of annoying neurological problem has turned out to be something like a superpower. You cannot be incensed, infuriated, enraged, manipulated, or propagandized by video that you don’t watch. Amazing how that works. I think more people should try it. It would be a serious QoL improvement for so many.

The Trump administration is scatterbrained because Trump is scatterbrained. Period. This is the iron rule of organizations that I’ve been observing for decades: any organization, no matter how large and complicated, ends up strikingly resembling its leader. Good leaders induce good organizations. Inane carnival barkers induce bad ones.

Hiring an incompetent White House press secretary who looks like a lady of the evening, or announcing a public execution only to cancel it later, may seem trivial. But they’re symptoms of a more general incompetence that is putting any possibility of real and lasting reform at great risk. We wouldn’t be going into the midterms with an idiotic Iran War handing the Democrats an easy victory if Trump could be bothered to think before acting, or to exhibit competence when he does act.

Yes, I also intend to vote robotically 100% Republican, but I’ll be doing so while gritting my teeth and remembering the miraculous 2024 popular-vote-winning coaltion that Trump apparently decided he could afford to throw away.

All true. We would be coasting to victory right now, happy and unbothered, without the moronic Iran war. In the history of unforced errors, this one is a huge, gaping gaffe of extreme proportions.
