Med Weirdness

It always feels weird when a doctor’s receptionist at a regular wellness check asks me for my “list of medications”. I’m not so ancient I’m supposed to be on a bunch of meds, am I?

My other personal favorite is when a nurse asks, “what do you take for your pain?” What pain? Why am I supposed to be in pain? It’s a regular, routine visit. Why does anybody assume I’m medicated for pain?

The sparklage us due to having two events today, one of which consists of me grading students on their sociability. Somebody will need pain meds after that but I hope it won’t be me.

The New Komsomol

I saw a segment about high-school debate competitions on a recent Matt Walsh show, and, people, my blood ran cold. I’m in academia, so I hear outlandishly woke stuff daily. But what I heard and saw in these high-schoolers is beyond what even I was prepared for. The far-left sense of grievance cultivated in them turns into something downright scary in conjunction with the undeveloped teenage brain and a body in the state of a hormonal transformation. This is 1920s Komsomol type of scary.

The kids will either grow up and calm down or self-destruct with “mental illness” and drugs but before nature and nurture take their course, they can be sicced successfully on all manner of “enemies of the people.”

Who’s an Author?

Our trusty “austere religious scholar” is back, my friends! NYTimes continues its tradition of inventive headlines. See this one:

So what has this “Palestinian author” authored? Here’s an example of a text she authored:

I mean, it’s not like the NYTimes headline is literally untrue. This is a text of the woman’s authorship, so she’s definitely an author. But it’s clear where the sympathies of NYTimes lie. Please remember this when you are tempted to trust its coverage of anything.

The Coalition of the Aggrieved

Biden has had to make a painful electoral choice between losing his rich Jewish donors or antagonizing the young, the African Americans, and the far left. For now, he chose the money and supported Israel.

I don’t blame him for making these calculations, by the way. That’s what a politician is supposed to do.

It’s funny, though. Democrats are a coalition of the aggrieved. And it worked until the aggrieved made it clear that their biggest grievances are against each other. Now Dad had to side with one aggrieved sibling over a bunch of others, and it’s not pretty.

Appeals to Dumb Voters

I don’t know if he really said this, and I hope not but this appeals only to the most humongously dumb voters.

A decrease in the rate of growth of the inflation – which did happen and that’s great – doesn’t mean the inflation itself has been reversed. The US dollar costs less today than when the inflation began, and that is reflected in the prices.

Also, the idea that these appeals from the president to the “corporations” can have any impact is moronic. Obviously, Biden is not a moron. The people who react positively to these statements are.

By the way, the steepest price increases can be found among small businesses because they don’t have the capacity to “eat” the increasing costs of materials and labor.

People are so ignorant they don’t know the difference between inflation and inflation rate.

Milei’s Kippah

I saw a video of a recently converted Javier Milei in a kippah, and it’s a big deal. An elected leader of a large Latin American country in a kippah and who’s a strong supporter of Ukraine is a very big deal. Now two Latin American countries have real conservative leaders. And OK, El Salvador is tiny but Argentina is big and important. If things get better there economically, this might start prying the whole region away from its deadly love affair with socialism.

Reality versus Coverage

It’s true. The Russian Black Sea fleet has been mega-whupped by a country with no navy. This is the biggest success of the Ukrainian summer counteroffensive, and it’s pretty amazing. Of course, the Western MSM spent months whining that the counteroffensive failed but it’s not like anybody expects them to get anything right.

Nothing Learned

And they still learned nothing.

OK, let’s give it some more time.

The Real Threat to Democracy

The Booker Prize was awarded to a novel that imagines a far-right totalitarianism “destroying our democracy” in Ireland. Apparently, the judges chose the book as a winner in response to “far-right violence [that] erupted in Dublin following a stabbing attack on a group of children”. The quote is from the NPR, which one can easily guess based on the use of the words “far-right” and the elision of the perpetrator of “a stabbing attack”.

It’s truly fascinating how people can live in the existing reality, observe everything that is going on and still think that it’s the Right that threatens our freedom. The exact same people who are terrified out of their heads to mention who actually stabbed the children in Ireland. The same people who live in actual daily fear of the censorious, aggressive, destructive left.

Political Realignment

Now, this is serious. A highly successful, articulate immigrant group that can donate big and that’s over-represented in culture-making institutions. That would be a massive loss for the Democrats.

I’ve been puzzled for years why American Jews are so devoted to the Left that despises everything that matters to them. Still, I don’t think that the posr-October 7 moment would last and there will be a serious political realignment among Jewish voters. It will take much more to peel Jews away from the Left.
