There are two words that invariably make me stop reading any post, article, or comment the moment I encounter them. These words are “Islamofascism” and “feminazis”. Come on, people. “Fascism” and “Nazi” are not the kind of words that should ever be bandied about lightly. If you are in any doubt as to the correct usage of these terms, pick up a book, watch a documentary, browse the Internet. There is a wealth of information available on fascism and Nazism. Don’t make a fool out of yourself by creating weird and offensive verbal concoctions to signal your irrational dislike of entire groups of people.
And while I’m on it, what’s with the outrageous “Islamic terrorism” expression? Are people who use it completely out of touch with reality, or what? There is NO Islamic terrorism. It doesn’t exist. There is nothing in the Koran that makes people perpetrate acts of terror.
There are people who are Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, atheists, agnostics, etc., etc. who are horrible individuals and/or engage in terrorism.
As I said before, I don’t claim to be any sort of authority on the Koran or Islam. However, everything I have read and learned on the subject (which, believe me, is a lot more than any regular person has) tells me that there is nothing that makes Islam somehow inherently violent and inciting to terrorism. What I got from my reading of the Koran and my study of the history of Islam is that this is a religion of love, charity, beauty, poetry, respect for language, and benevolence. This is not my religion and I don’t feel like practicing it. However, I can’t fail to recognize its beauty and power.
Islam has been used to justify inflicting horrors on people. But Christianity has been used for the same purpose and with really horrifying results, too. So has “scientific atheism.” Even the most beautiful, profound ideas can be perverted by vile people who want to achieve goals that has nothing to do with the religion (or lack thereof) they claim to profess.
So please, let’s stop with “Islamofascism”, “feminazis” and “Islamic terrorism” already. Using these expressions makes you sound like a bigoted, stupid fool that you probably are.
Yes, I am very angry about this.
I find the usage of these words especially outrageous when used in a piece that is actually argumentative and comes across as honest and informed opinion at first and not the usual hate-screeching.
Sometimes there are two or three paragraphs which are perfectly fine and sometimes even make sense and then suddenly an absolutely racist, fascist, ableist, *ist term comes along and stops you dead in your tracks.
Truth be told, that makes me feel sad, infuriated and kind of stupid. Sad because whoever wrote that text possesses the mental capability to assume an argumentative stance, but flat out refuses to use it to do some proper introspection, stupid because I actually enjoyed reading (although not necessarily agreeing) this text up until this point and infuriated because the authors actually thought they could sneak their bigotry into my brain without me noticing.

I agree completely. This kind of hatred is always so blatant and manipulative that I can’t understand why so many people swallow it wholesale.

What I got from my reading of the Koran
So, you’ve fully read all 3 holy books?
After arriving to Israel, I mistakenly thought I had to read the entire Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) and did this during the summer with help of special edition of Russian | Hebrew pages. However, I didn’t feel enlightened, except knowing the stories and some ancient history of Jews. Probably because of not being a believer and not having any knowledge, except the book itself. At school Tanakh lessons again we studied the chosen stories, a bit history (when they were written), the tiniest bit of literature analysis & concepts. However, not a word about philosophy of the religion or how it’s practiced, how different practices developed through the centuries, which imo is more important. If I could choose, I would want a course ~ like in my grandmother’s uni days in USSR about the history of all main world religions (minus propaganda), their philosophies, how lives of believers look like (traditions).
May be you could enlighten many readers with a new series of posts on religions (main 3 and may be the 4 Indian religious traditions too), what their core philosophies / worldviews are, what are the core differences among them and what are the similarities, touch upon politicised aspects as well:
– Why isn’t the 1st monotheistic religion missionary, while others are?
– What is the matter with Jews in Christianity? Weren’t (and aren’t) they believed to carry the sin of killing Jesus?
Etc.

I’m really not qualified to do this kind of analysis, to be honest. In case of Christianity, for example, there is such an unbridgeable chasm between what the foundational text says and what people have been doing with it that the very word Christianity has been emptied of all content, except the most personal, intimate one. Basically, I’d say that Christianity is what anybody wants to make of it. I can’t say for sure, but I think Islam has the same kind of fate. As to all other religions, my ignorance is complete and utter. 🙂

You never wanted to read a bit about Jews’ religion? I understood you were interested in the topic.

I read the Bible, so I know that much. Never found the pre-Jesus part to be appealing to myself to be honest. It’s just a personal literary preference, of course. I don’t mean to be offensive with this.

Forgot to add: huge numbers of people believe in 1 out of 3 main religions and everybody thinks s/he is right. Previously you agreed with Richard Dawkins’s stand that children shouldn’t be assumed to have the religion of their parents, but choose freely their beliefs in adulthood. OK, so one is an adult and searches for the religion that feels right for lack of better term. Would their be a connection between somebody’s personality, basic approach to life, and the chosen religion? There is a connection between this question and the one about core differences in worldview among religions imo.

There are not 3 main religions in the world. Just sayin’.

I meant the main 3 monotheistic religions, in which max number of people believes.

Probably your qualifiers make room for this, but the third largest ‘religious’ group in the world are who identified as ‘no religion’ or ‘secular’. The fourth is Hinduism, which has a small but strong monotheistic component. Fifth is Buddhism and sixth, Sikhism, both of which are largely monotheistic. Judaism is the tenth on this list.
Christianity and Islam are first and second though, you were right about that.

I think there are more Hindus than Jews in the world, for example. That’s what I meant. I wasn’t trying to be obnoxious.

My father says the New Testament is the most Jewish text he has ever encountered in his life. 🙂 The whole “They tell you X, but I say Y” approach, never answering the question directly but rather offering a story you need to analyze and draw your own conclusions, etc.
On the subject of my father, the Russian Federation has just awarded him the Anton Chekhov gold medal for his contribution to Russian literature. I’m very proud, so I couldn’t hold it in. Even though it has nothing to do with the topic we are discussing. 🙂 🙂

The people, who wrote the New Testament, unlike Jesus, already didn’t see themselves as Jews, right?
Congratulations!

In the religious sense, probably not. But in terms of their ethnicity, they still do.
As I said, my father got baptized 2 years ago, but that didn’t do anything to remove his ethnic origins. I’d never get baptized but still, he’s entirely Jewish while I’m just 50% so. 🙂

Russian Orthodox. Have you seen the most recent photo on this blog with zigging little girls. That. Of course, my mother always puts all priests firmly in their place. 🙂

I’ll explain the reason why “feminazi” is used; many pseudo-feminists (in Québec, many men and women (mainly men!!!!!) in the public sector) believes that women are superior people than men, like Nazies believe that non-Jews are inferior people. That’s the reason why “feminazi” (often used par MRAs who are even more “mascunazies”) is used.
Now, I call it “sexism”, “femi-sexism” or, mainly, “femi-favoritism”.

What in particular has “scientific atheism” done to justify inflicting horrors on people?
LikeLike
The usual. Namely, the need to liberate them from their delusions by force. Beautiful cathedrals and churches were demolished by the hundred in the Soviet Union. Priests who refused to become KGB informers were killed.

And how was this justified with atheism? I’m asking because I don’t know enough myself and my impression is that you do.

I asked you before if you have ever actually read the Koran…you didn’t answer me. The Koran plainly mandates the conquest of the entire world, by force when necessary, by Islam. In Europe, those Islamic fundamentalists with insight have discovered that, all that is required for the Islamic conquest of Europe is TIME. I forget the actual numbers. But basically, the average number of European couples’ offspring is not even sufficient to replace themselves (less than 2). Whereas, their Muslim counterparts are having 4-5 children. Plain common sense dictates that Europe will be Islamic after some measure of time, provided this pattern continues. It is much different in the United States. This scenario would take nearly forever to play out. In countries that are governed by Sharia (Islamic or Koranic) law, it is punishable by death to convert FROM Islam, or to attempt to convert a muslim from his Islamic faith. I consider this Islamic terrorism. When multitudes are motivated by nothing except their religious beliefs, and are motivated to commit acts af terrorism, I do not see how it is incorrect to connect the two. Please prove me wrong…

I’m sorry, my friend, not a word of what you write is true.
Yes, I read the Koran and I repeat, it can be interpreted in very many ways. It is poetry, which precludes a single reading.
All immigrants into Europe begin to have the same birth rates as Europeans in the second generation. Please, do not believe these racist myths about constantly multiplying Muslims who will take over the world. This is just weird, baseless propaganda. European immigration policies are, indeed, idiotic. That’s an issue that should be discussed. Not whose religious fanaticism is better. They are all worse.

“Yes, I read the Koran”
Did you read it in the usual printed order in chronological order?
I’m told the impression received from reading the chapters in the (most probable|) order they were written is very different from reading in the usual printed order which is basically from longest to shortest.
LikeLike
It was done in class so chronologically. For the most part, I have to confess I was bored because it’s way too poetic for me. I’m a lot more into Jesus because he was more to the point: “Stop bugging me with silly shit, folks. Just keep out of everybody else ‘s business and it will all be fine.” What’s not to like?
Of course, then idiots misread Jesus as saying the exact opposite.
