Weird Obama and Romney Ads

Can anybody decipher the following Obama ad for me?

Tell Barack you are in. . . what, exactly? And where should we join Michelle? In voting for Obama? With all due respect, why should anybody be influenced by Michelle Obama’s decision to vote for her own husband?

This isn’t the first time that I’m getting the feeling that Obama is trying hard not to win this election.

The good news is that his opponent is fighting for the same goal even harder. Look at a similar ad by Romney’s campaign:

I mean, if she is so much better than Romney that we are asked to stand with her and not with him, then maybe we should just go ahead and vote for her instead?

“Are you in?” is a colloquial expression meaning, roughly, “Are you willing to be part of the movement, activity, or whatever, that is being proposed.” I think it started with men trying to get a group of other men together for a poker game; that is where I first heard it.

Because she’s a celebrity in her own right. She’d good-looking and charismatic and presents some sort of an aspirational figure for many millions of people. Your question is the political equivalent of asking why should people be influenced by the model in a bikini drinking Pepsi. They *shouldn’t*, but they *are*. That’s how ads work. This way of garnering votes may not be effective on you but then I don’t think Obama’s targeting people like you (informed, political junkie) with these ads.

Romney’s ad doesn’t make any sense to me because Ann Romney isn’t even a celebrity. We don’t know anything about her so we don’t give a shit who’s she voting for.

  – I like her, too, but would anybody vote for Obama just because they like Michelle? As great as she might be, it’s Obama who is worrying us all at this time. Even though he can’t avoid winning this election. I just want everybody to remember that I predicted his win almost a year ago. 🙂

To be honest, I’ve never understood the American habit of considering the wives of the candidates as a factor in elections; the First Lady doesn’t have any real power. Sometimes I get the feeling that the US secretly wishes that it was a monarchy.

  I know! This weird fixation on spouses of politicians is very annoying. It’s the same in Russia but not in Ukraine.
