Principled

Since we are having a boy, he is getting N.’s last name. This is what we agreed on at the very beginning of the relationship. If this were a girl, she would get my last name.

N. doesn’t care what last name the kid gets, and the boy is getting his name. Of course, as my Jewish luck would have it, I do care and I lost the gamble.

Yes, I know it’s medieval to care, but if I can’t be honest with readers of my own blog, then where can I confess the truth? This name business matters to me.

Of course, since N. doesn’t care, I could get him to agree to rescind the original agreement. But this is a matter of principle. We cannot be in favor of gender equality only when it suits us. Equality is too important to be discarded whenever it becomes inconvenient.

I guess it’ll just have to be a coin toss between me and whatever unfortunate guy I end up raising a kid with. 😛

I like the idea of disliking something instinctually, but knowing better than to let that affect you intellectually. It think it takes a lot of maturity. More than I have, anyway. 😛

If you both have short last name, you can create a double-barrelled one. Of course, I hear this is a class marker in your country, so maybe it’s not a good idea. 🙂

Ah, but then there’d still be the question of whose name gets to go first. 😛

Yes, I know what you mean. 🙂 We also discarded endowing the poor kid with two very Russian-sounding last names full of the letter “z.” 🙂

So we will toss the coin until it gives me the result I want? Sounds very fair. 🙂

Why bring gender equality into it? If you care and he doesn’t, take your last name. There will be another issue where he cares and you don’t. Let him decide then.

Because I’m a pushy, domineering person, dear Bola. If I don’t impose some limits on myself, I will soon turn into a typical Ukrainian woman who has everybody around her bullied into complete submission.
