On Syria

Obama says he is justified in meddling with Syria because there is a rumor chemical weapons were used there and there is also a bad, mean dictator in the country. I’m starting to believe that Obama’s real name is Bush. Haven’t we heard this exact same story about WMDs and evil dictators in the exact same context a few years ago?

Also, does anybody see any reason for the US meddling in Syria other than the country’s bizarre need to restore the Cold War-like tensions with Russia? Of course, Putin is delighted because this is a dream come true for him.

Or is this simply an attempt to jump-start the US economy? (I know it won’t work but the White House seems wedded to this strategy.)

    1. Well, if he is dead-set on making sure he is dislikes as fiercely as possible, what can be done? I can’t imagine Americans being in favor of this Syria meddling, for instance. Not to speak of the NSA scandal.

  1. This doesn’t sound like the kind of thing you’d expect from a Nobel Peace Prize winner, eh?

  2. Chemical weapons are being used, it’s no rumor.

“Medics working in six rebel-held districts near Damascus have treated several hundred fighters for symptoms of chemical exposure since March, a detailed investigation has found, adding fresh impetus to claims the Syrian regime has resorted to the banned weapons.

A reporter from the French newspaper Le Monde who spent two months with rebel groups on the edge of the Syrian capital claims to have witnessed chemical attacks and to have seen numerous victims at various stages of exposure.”

Unlike in Iraq’s case, Syria is already in a horrible war costing lives of numerous Syrian people, a civil war. I don’t say it’s in US interests to interfere, just that weapons are used.

  3. I’m assuming that presidents (Bush or Obama) don’t have a great deal of leverage in questions of applying military force but that such decisions are made by unelected interests and the president goes along because they know what’s good for them. (Iraq might have been a partial exception in being initiated by the white house and said interests thought it was a good idea too).

If you think that’s crazy then find another explantion for Obama’s military policies so far. I’ll wait.

      – And if he doesn’t go along, what can the consequences possibly be for him? He isn’t running for the election, which is the excuse we’ve been hearing for the past 4 years. What prevents him from having some power now?

  4. The US want to arm rebels and Russia is coming out in support of the regime. This is a text book example of proxy war. Fits in nicely with the Cold War style.
