Not Funny

I understand that this is a joke but it’s not a funny one. Especially, since I just had to explain to a cashier that a cucumber and an acorn squash are not the same thing. If you’ve ever seen both, you’d know why this isn’t funny either.

Are you sure her mother’s tongue is English? If yes, she has probably grown up in a food desert. After such childhood even working as a cashier may not help. 😦 Remember the video, in which school children didn’t know what a tomatoe is?

Everybody is an English-speaker in this area. We don’t get many immigrants other than college profs.

Come to think of it, I am that person whose first language is not English and who grew up in a food desert.

A food desert without vegetables?! I thought without cheese and meat, which US food deserts have in abundance.

I don’t know what an acorn squash is called in Russian. Do you? Obviously I had never seen it before emigrating.

I’m not even sure how much this is meant to be a joke and how much it is meant to give the impression that chips are good for you.
