It is completely unimportant where and how intellectuals get educated. I’ve known many people who could paper a small room with their diplomas but who were complete blockheads. I have also known many people who never finished high school, yet who were brilliant intellectuals.
There will really be no formal criteria to organize our thinking about this issue.
Intellectuals could be more easily defined by their insatiable curiosity, and their never-ending questioning of all that surrounds them. It’s something innate but that we lose as we adapt to society rules, and submit to our own instincts.
Education as you say is not a prerequisite, but a good knowledge base makes our intellectual efforts more profitable. Too much education might kill that curiosity instinct.
More important for an intellectual is an environment where he or she’s constantly challenged. It’s only here that an intellectual thrives and stays one. This environment can be only himself and nature but most likely it will require the society of other intellectuals.
