The World Is Weird

It seems I have misplaced my parents. This is such a small town but I have no clue where I can find them. So while I’m sitting here waiting for them to resurface I decided to check out what has been happening in the world these days that I have been mostly out of it. What I discovered made me wonder if my mental faculties have been impaired:

1. Putin has become a correspondent for the NYTimes. Is that true or is my iPod making fun of me?

2. Fox News is nominating Putin for the Nobel Peace Prize. Well, it’s Fox News, so nothing can be too surprising.

3. Our university’s post office is closing because it has become financially unsustainable. Are we entering another recession or something?

There is weirdness everywhere.

  Bloody hell, if the man can’t himself write, he could at least get some subaltern to look over his piece and check for unintentional humour. I’m not sure I can read past “But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.” without cracking up.

A small point (in the big scheme of things) which nonetheless bugs me.

Are people supposed to believe that Putin knows English well enough to write that in English? And if (as seems mucho mas more likely) it was written in Russia and translated then why didn’t the poor translator get any credit?

I can see Putin’s office releasing the translation as if it came from the big bully boy himself, but it’s sad to think that the people running the NYTimes are so stupid that they didn’t think to ask (or mention the provenance of the editorial).

    Or whoever actually did write it. I can imagine him telling his saff to produce a suitable NYT op ed in English and then just signing his name to it.
