Enlightened North Carolina

There is free wi-fi at the airport of Charlotte, NC. Too many places are abandoning the enlightened practice of offering free Internet access. The hotel where we will be staying in Pensacola charges people $10 per day for EACH device. And do you know many people who travel with just one device? We are traveling with 4, and 3 of them are mine.

Given that unlimited access phone plans are a thing of the past, this is very obnoxious.

I think there should be some sort of a mass movement for free wi-fi coverage everywhere. Companies that sell hand-held devices and apps will profit directly from this.

Its trend that’s been happening for a while. Back in the early days of data plans cell carriers were in the practice of just selling unlimited data for a set amount while selling a limited number of minutes and texts for a set amount. However as mobile data caught on most of the major carriers have pulled a total swap and now sell unlimited minutes and text for a set amount and limited mobile data for a set amount.

Now that mobile devices are almost literally everywhere every business from here to the eternity is trying to figure out how to capitalize on it.

I think there should be some sort of a mass movement for free wi-fi coverage everywhere. Companies that sell hand-held devices and apps will profit directly from this.
There have been city wide pushes for free wifi coverage (which is often called municipal wifi) and the biggest opponents are usually the local telcos such as Time Warner, Comcast, Suddenlink, and CenturyLink, who usually have almost a monopolizing grip on the internet service in cities and towns..

I’m shocked. Everywhere I go here in Europe wifi in hotels is free. I’d be furious if it wasn’t. Mind you, sometimes it’s not available in the rooms but just in the lobby (in small hotels).

  It’s free in the lobby but the hotel is huge and one can’t spend all one’s time in the lobby. This is aggravating.
