Have you heard about the post of this sad, lost loser who realized he was about to marry a woman he didn’t love but whose Daddy manipulated him into marrying her anyway? Now this victim of patriarchy has written a post about the experience:

With a knowing smile [the father] said, “Seth, you’re being totally selfish. So I’m going to make this really simple: marriage isn’t for you. You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy. More than that, your marriage isn’t for yourself, you’re marrying for a family. Not just for the in-laws and all of that nonsense, but for your future children. Who do you want to help you raise them? Who do you want to influence them? Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you married.”

In short, a castrating Daddy at his emasculating best.

Of course, there are many such sad schmucks in the world, so 26 million people in miserable marriages linked, re-blogged, tweeted and posted this testament to masochism. And they didn’t do it to ridicule the idiot who wrote it.

Somewhere, a group of divorce lawyers is dying to get its hands on the names and addresses of these people because here are 26 million very nasty divorces about to happen.

The patriarch’s advice is not completely useless, though. If you want a really happy marriage, do the exact opposite of what this guy suggests. And then the divorce lawyers will never get any of your money.

Thank goodness! When this appeared on my Facebook roll, I pretty much thought I was the only one who thought it was ridiculous.

Remember this old Russian proverb that in a good marriage people “Живут не для радости, а для совести.” 🙂 It is very important NOT to derive any enjoyment from your relationship.

It’s very much along the same lines as the fake letter from Brad Pitt to Angelina Jolie that circled around on Facebook for a while. People like this type of crap.

I have been spared from reading that, thank God. 🙂

This is the single worst advice that I have ever heard; I suspect that the father must have stood to gain something from his son’s marriage.

Right? This is a recipe for misery and dysfunction!

The guy has one kind papa. 🙂

“If you want a really happy marriage, do the exact opposite of what this guy suggests”

hmm let’s try it “marriage is for your sake. You marry to make yourself happy, you don’t marry to make someone else happy. …. Marriage is for you. It’s all about you. Marriage isn’t about the person you married at all.”

I somehow don’t perceive that working in the real world either….

Annnnnyway, no one else has mentioned it (in so many words) so I will.

The underlying premise of the original article seems to be that happiness is a zero sum game and that one’s natural impulse is for people to not care about the happiness of their spouse. More happiness for one automatically means less happiness for the other.

Ideally, in a healthy relationship, both partners want to increase the overall happiness quotient of all involved. But then I think of happiness as a renewable infinite resource. It can be hard to fine and access at times but once you do there’s no reason for the well to ever go dry.

Asking two married people to only think of their partner’s happiness is a good way to ensure both of them end up miserable.

Brushing your hair isn’t for you, it’s for your hair and so that other people can admire it. Watch it glow in the dark. See it curl along its way. You care about the future, don’t you? Not just about yourself? So why not stretch your hair out into the future until it becomes a golden stairway unto heaven?

You may laugh, but I have been exhorted to style my hair in a way that would be a credit to my school and my organization of young communist pioneers. 🙂 🙂
