Well, of course somebody was bound to develop a sexual fetish for MLA interviews. A fetishistic attachment is a frequent response to a traumatic experience. The need to replay the painful episode is similar to the compulsion to pick on a scab. Finally, it ends up causing a masochistic sort of pleasure.
The only thing that is surprising here is why more people don’t fetishize the MLA sexually.
I’m certain there’s more – this is just the one person who didn’t have the sense to either get someone they’re already sleeping with to act this out with them or hire an escort. I find the groveling response really sad though – a roleplay ad on Craigslist doing “a disservice to all scholars”? Really?!

I am imagining the “MLA fetish” as being something almost as obscure as Erica Jong’s long diversion into the toilet habits of Europeans, with the memorable bit being how Britannia sails the mighty seas again …
(Terrific, someone’s probably going to turn that into a fan-fic called “Fear of Citing”.)
