Scary People

A 27-year-old woman on television just said, “I don’t really want to have kids. I just want to be a Mom.”

It’s a very scary statement, if you think about it.

It does not seem scary to me, but it does seem weird. Much like a college friend of mine who once said to the woman who later became his wife: “It’s OK if we don’t have kids. We can just wait and enjoy our grandchildren.”

He must have been joking because the statement doesn’t make much sense otherwise.

That’s very common. Wanting the social role and the position but not their content.

      Common but still scary, though.

Huh? Does she mean she doesn’t want to have kids biologically and exclusively wants to adopt?

She’s saying she doesn’t care about having a kid, but she likes the authority and social role of being a mother.

No, I think she means she’ll have them but only because being a mother is something she looks forward to.

I think that is what Benoni is saying.

Ever read romance novels? A very common pattern is a young virgin falling in love with a widower (with a perfect and adorable child).

Same thing – instant motherhood without the icky biology.
