Putin called Obama and hinted that he might leave Ukraine in peace and not invade any further if Obama lets him annex Transnistria. Of course, Transnistria’s only value for Putin is that holding it will make annexing a bigger part of Ukraine easier.
I really, really hope Obama doesn’t fall for this dirty trick.
I have the feeling that Obama is simply bored by the whole Ukrainian situation since he knows virtually nothing about it and cares even less. He probably resents having to deal with this weird white guy with his eurocentric white guy concerns.
In short: Don’t expect anything like statemanship from Obama on this and you won’t be disappointed.

– So I’ve been thinking about this comment, and I think that you are onto something here. I am observing the attitude of boredom towards the crisis in Ukraine and Russia from many Liberal acquaintances and bloggers. I don’t understand why they find this particular conflict so tedious. Why is it less exciting than, say, what’s been happening in Egypt?

May be, exactly since Egypt is both far away and provided the exciting narrative of people making a bloodless revolution by getting rid of their own tyrant.
In contrast, here you have two countries, one of which is Russia and many on the Left got tired of the Cold War propaganda, don’t want to participate in something like that, think it’s Eastern Europian (thus twice removed from USA) conflict. Tired from America sending its soldiers abroad, so hate the idea of any interference, if it could lead to war.
Also, Russian propaganda talks about fascists. Somebody from US could think “they are all one “better” than another there, let them sort it out themselves.” Don’t know if those bloggers read Russian press (in English), of course.

Because this happened after Egypt. Egypt was understood in the West as a plucky-revolutionaries-fighting-dictators story, and when the plucky revolutionaries’ victory didn’t ensure they lived happily ever after, the Western audience felt cheated, and are now making sure they’re not taken for rubes by exhibiting an appropriately cynical, won’t-fool-me-twice attitude.

I guess this is why I keep seeing comments of the “but Ukrainians are not 100% perfect, so why should anybody care about them?” variety. People can’t find their way until they have fit reality into a cowboy movie storyline.

Precisely 😦 They don’t know shit about Ukraine, Egypt, war or revolution, and most people don’t care about what they don’t understand. Nearly everybody understands cowboy movies though.
