Clueless

Gosh, you’ve got to love my people. I watch this Russian TV show where people come to meet a potential date. It’s called “Let’s Get Married!”

So here is how a prospective bride from Ukraine dressed to impress a black suitor:

Clueless doesn’t begin to describe it. I’m sorry, I know this is offensive but this is truly a picture that substitutes thousands of words. Now do you understand why I do all I can to avoid fellow Russian-speakers?

      1. Didn’t you ever see the Chunga Changa clip from Katerok? It is a very famous 1970 Soviet animated film. They play it all the time in Kyrgyzstan. It is also one of the most racist cartoons ever made. Here is the Youtube clip, but be forewarned. Remember this was produced by the Soviet government in 1970.

        1. Oh God, I’d never forget it. This song is so sticky that I have it playing in my head even now on regular occasions, about 30 or so years after watching the cartoon. It was insanely popular when I was a kid. Of course, it never occurred to anybody that anything might be wrong with it.

      1. “My comment was facetious, by the way, for Fox News viewers who lack discretion and discernment especially with regard to tone.”

        – I think we are all trying to be funny here. 🙂 I don’t really blame Australians either. Well, maybe just a little bit (see the link encyclopedia tomorrow.)

        1. I wasn’t trying to be funny so much as reflexive, like someone who drones on and on that one and one is three, because it makes me feel smarter than other people.

            1. Yes, I must be so weary. (Actually I’m not sure where this dialogue is going any more, but it seems to attribute my intelligence as higher than anybody else’s). Anyway, my point was, as it was before, that racism is caused by British colonialism and I am responsible for it. So I’m not sure if that makes me intelligent, but it sure makes me more powerful than almost anybody I have met.

              1. Yes, just assume your collective guilt and wear it proudly. We can even make a list of everything you are responsible for. Like the Ice Age. How could you do all that to the nice, cuddly dinosaurs? For shame!

    1. “We should forecfully condemn the British”

Actually I think it’s enough to forcefully condemn you. All those in favor in drafting a formal condemnation of musteryou, say ‘Aye’!

  1. Im still marveling over the line “Youve got to love my people”. So, would that be the Russian ones or Ukrainians?

    1. The worst part came after the dance when the black gentleman said, “I’m not into colored women, they don’t exist for me.” To survive in Russia, a black person would have to interiorize really horrible things.

      1. Am I a pessimist for assuming that there were people in the audience who probably found that kind of internalized sexual racism on display to be endearing and attractive, or even, edgy (yawn)?

  2. To be fair..why does the mask look just like the old minstrel stereotypes of America? I thought other countries would come up with a different brand of stereotypes. Maybe their basing their perception of black culture from blackface entertainment or something? Or maybe it’s subtly different from the older blackface entertainment and I haven’t noticed?

    1. I know, I also wondered where she even found it. We don’t know anything about blackface in Ukraine and Russia, the word is not familiar to anybody and has no equivalent, so how she came up with this is a mystery.
