New Driver

So guess who just got her driver’s license for the very first time at the age of 38?

Right you are!

The DMV guy who administered the road test turned out to be a graduate of my university. When I told him who I was, he immediately switched into a student role with me and started asking advice on how to improve his Spanish.

After I almost hit a lady who chose this moment to jump into the oncoming traffic and forgot how to roll down the window and signal left, I kind of got myself together and managed to roll the car back into the DMV parking lot.

And now I have a real driver’s license.

    Slightly mixed feelings here.

    One the one hand, CONGRATULATIONS!

On the other, I can’t help but feel that the system has failed somehow…..

I drive very well, thank you very much. 🙂 I’m exaggerating my ineptitude for comic effect. I’m tons more safe on the road than silly 16-yar-olds who get licences every day and than the 87-year-old lady I saw renew her license today at the DMV who could barely get herself to the door without falling over or forgetting where she was.

When my older brother was learning to drive I (from the back seat) would merrily sing “Oh he’ll be the death of us all!” at the top of my lungs.

When I was learning to drive I became aware of roads and driving as constantly full of danger and could not stand to be in a car I wasn’t driving (I’m still not over this entirely).

I wish my husband had this problem. But now he’s all, “If you don’t drive, then we can just stay home and not go shopping!” And this is a very painful choice for me! 🙂

You can drive around without an L plate prominently affixed to your vehicle?

        Shocking. 🙂

Congrats! The examiner when I did my exam was a police officer (in my home state, thats who does the exams), and he sat down in the front seat, took his gun out of its holder, and spent the entire exam stroking it in his lap. Not sure whether I was more nervous about the test or the examiner. Needless to say, I, like you, survived. 🙂

    Enjoy and drive safe! 🙂

I hope you have learned, or soon do learn, to drive a car with a standard transmission.
