Terrorists in Slovyansk

After the city of Slovyansk was liberated from pro-Russian terrorists by the Ukrainian Army, this was what the soldiers found in the separatists’ headquarters:

  1. Why would somebody be so stupid as to use Nazi signs? May be, the Ukrainian Army itself put it there to use in the propaganda war, which is going on now and is very important for both sides?

  2. Both sides do propaganda warfare. Does not mean they are equally right or equally wrong, but both do propaganda warfare, for sure. Either that or it is a part of Strelkov’s war reenactment chest. Remember, Strelkov/Girkin used to be a famous reenactor?

    1. @valter07:

So the uniform is probably just a reenactor’s prop that made a good photo opportunity, then?

(Both sides have accused the other of being “fascists” and “neo-nazis,” but not, to my knowledge, of wearing anything resembling WWII German Nazi insignia.)

      1. Isn’t it curious that this is what he decided to reenact at this particular point in time? Russian terrorists include many open neo-Nazis. Putin cranked down on them in the country so they are going outside of it.

  3. Dreidel, I was being sarcastic. Yes, many Russian terrorists are the members of neo-nazi groups. But SS uniform? It is way too good a catch for propaganda war to be true. Suppose one goes to war against somebody one accuses of being nazis… Will one take his SS uniform with him (the uniform he is secretly wearing among friends)?

    1. You are assuming that these people are ashamed of their politics and care about the impression they make on those few who still abhor Nazism. But they are neither. Especially since being a neo-Nazi is all you need to get the French and the Germans to swoon over you.

Times have changed. This uniform is not a scary symbol of something horrible as it used to be, say, 20 years ago. It is now cute and prestigious. This is the latest fashion trend.

      1. I am not assuming they are ashamed of anything, deep in their souls. I am assuming they have enough common sense not to simultaneously wear SS uniform and call their adversaries “nazis” and get caught.

          – Kiev authorities haven’t been called fascists for a long time. Now they are called “the Junta.” Which offends my every sensibility as a Hispanist. 🙂
