Social Gastropub

Wow, my small town has become really yappified. Something called “a social gastropub” is scheduled to open close to where I used to live.

There are several people protesting in front of the future social gastropub. They are standing facing the highway and holding placards. The placards are filled with a long text printed in tiny letters which nobody driving on the highway can possibly manage to read. I drove by twice and managed to catch a few words. It seems that the protest has something to do with the local union.

I have never even been to a gastropub, so the town is becoming too chic even for me. Does anybody have gastropub experience?

Everything arrives at the midwest late. 🙂

Lots of craft beer. Menu board has to be written in chalk. Small portions. Needs to have at least one pork belly item on their menu. French fries HAVE to be cooked in duck fat or you lose all street cred. Has to have American classics like tomato soup+grilled cheese sandwich and mac’n’cheese (but cooked very elegantly, with fancy cheeses). Focus on ‘seasonal’, ‘local produce’. At least they seem to care about food, so already it’s miles ahead of any chain restaurant in the area. Slightly overpriced, and if you know how to cook, the description of their food will not wow you as much as they hope it would.

Is that Russian influenced spelling? яппи? It’s usually ‘yuppified’ though now that I think of it, I really like ‘yappified’ (with the “app” vowel in the first syllable). It reminds me of small, obnoxious yappy dogs (I’m generally a dog lover but draw the line at small yappy things) and the kind of people who dote over them who are probably the kind of people to swoon over a ‘gastropub’ (an awful name and has a vagule soviet sound to it…)

  – Wow, that’s a Freudian slip if there ever was one! I will not correct it because it’s funnier this way.

Gastropub, cf Beastro — wanna-be posh eatery that has to reconcile its stated ambitions with the realisation that it is in fact a pub, and therefore primarily serves as a venue for getting tilted five sheets to the wind.

In Middle America, I’m imagining this as an overly ambitious former Pizza Hut that decided to have a go at a “prix fixe” menu. 🙂
