OK, what is it with the weirdly spelled names on female journalists? Megyn, Alisyn – are they changing their names to sound “unique” or are they collectively from families with strange spelling practices?

There’s a longstanding trend in the US to give non-hispanic white girls unique or striking personal names (with diverse local tradtions). It’s seen as an asset in a way unique first names for boys …. aren’t.
Among African Americans the trend since the 1970s is to be idiocyncratic and creative with first names for children of both sexes (though even before AA names went off the reservation they tended to be a little distinct – even when I was elementary school Jerome and Felicia were more likely to be AA than white while Tim and Beth were more likely white).

I’m all for unique, but these are just badly spelled. This must make a really bad impression on job applications.

I think “Megyn” probably had a feminist mother who considered herself a “womyn” rather than a “woman” (which has the dreaded word “man” in it).

I actually meant the Fox News commentator Megyn Kelly. The chances she had a feminist mother, or even stood next in line to a feminist, are nil. 🙂

Have you watched Megyn Kelly’s shows? She foams at the mouth when she says the word “feminists.” And she doesn’t “hold views.” Her head is an empty sieve that doesn’t hold anything.

Seriously, some of these names sound like they could be used to name pharmaceuticals.
I’m already imagining “Alisyn” as an SNRI used primarily to target symptoms of severe entitlement syndrome, for instance.
“Can’t check your privilege? Your GP may feel Alisyn is right for you.”
I’m waiting for the generation whose children have Meridia and Cymbalta as middle names …
