Robin Williams

I just heard that Robin Williams killed himself. What a tragedy, what sadness.

Mental health, mental health above all, people. If you liked this actor, make sure you honor his memory by doing something for your mental health today.

Very sad and yes, a bloody waste. My father took is own life, I feel so sad for Robin Williams family.
Clarissa your suggestion that we all do something for our mental health today is a good tribute. I shall pick damsons from my tree and make jam, it’s so satisfying and every jar tastes of summer days.

// Mental health, mental health above all, people.

“Robin Williams was sober but was struggling with depression, anxiety and the early stages of Parkinson’s disease when he died, his widow said Thursday.”

I don’t think every suicide is a mark of bad mental health. May be, he didn’t want to reach the advanced stage of Parkinson. In our town in Ukraine, one woman (a nurse or a doctor in profession) committed suicide because she didn’t want to suffer a slow, painful death from cancer.

Robin Williams was struggling with mental illness for decades before that and he said so many times.

Made me think about “The Suicide’s Room” by Wislawa Szymborska. She wrote “No prospects? The window had other views.”, but sometimes there are no other views.

I’ll bet you think the room was empty.
Wrong. There were three chairs with sturdy backs.
A lamp, good for fighting the dark.
A desk, and on the desk a wallet, some newspapers.
A carefree Buddha and a worried Christ.
Seven lucky elephants, a notebook in a drawer.
You think our addresses weren’t in it?

No books, no pictures, no records, you guess?
Wrong. A comforting trumpet poised in black hands.
Saskia and her cordial little flower.
    Joy the spark of gods.
Odysseus stretched on the shelf in life-giving sleep
after the labors of Book Five.
The moralists with the golden syllables of their names
    inscribed on finely tanned spines.
Next to them, the politicians braced their backs.

No way out? But what about the door?
No prospects? The window had other views.
His glasses lay on the windowsill.
And one fly buzzed—that is, was still alive.

You think at least the note could tell us something.
But what if I say there was no note—
and he had so many friends, but all of us fit neatly
inside the empty envelope propped up against a cup.

The early stages of Parkinson’s disease are treatable. I think it was just the last drop and he could not take it all anymore.
    May he Rest In Peace.

“… make sure you honour his memory by doing something for your mental health today.”

I ditched my “holiday retreat” in favour of going somewhere else where the food’s better, the people are generally nicer, and my money spends a lot farther …

    I feel better already.

The window clearly had other views, but that wasn’t the way out — I got on a plane. 🙂

(BTW, yes, there was a reason I went quiet — massive jet lag will mess up your week.)
